#time #musing In a workshop conducted by artist Kok Heng Leun, I remember that he said that artists steal time. How do we - in the short time that an audience has give to us - transform an experience of time, space, relations? When I started TTKC, I felt that I was a time robber. It was a game of getting more time spent together with the children and the community. Unconditional time spent doing fun things! I still am now perhaps, as someone who have to negotiate for resources, an even bigger time robber. Getting the right resource for more people to transform the way time is spent together. It gets more complicated with more resources required, because time will be valued for its outcomes. I very recently attended a learning session organised by The Majurity Trust on innovation in education support for children from the lower income households. In my small group, experienced community workers and educators landed at the challenge of time deficit. Innovation for human-centric work is really time. How can we revolutionise a system where we can spend 30-min of quality time everyday, instead of packing it into a 3-hour weekly session? We say it’s the individual family’s responsibility, edutech can perhaps solve the problem. As a community-based practitioner, I keep wondering to myself: how are these solutions transforming the quality of time, space and relations created together? Human resourcing, volunteer cultivation, creating shared environments for children to be cared for more consistently in community spaces… perhaps this will be a really big piece to look into for the next few years. I haven’t been quite able to immerse myself in the buzzing of “I Draw You You Draw Me” with so much resourcing questions unanswered. But as I looked through the community art pieces… Thanks Artist Alfi, I believe … you must be a child!

Have you ever watched children at play? Or perhaps you remember being a child and playing? Do you still play? There is an energy created by the action we call “play” that is healing and rejuvenating and even empowering. It connects you directly with the seat of your soul. What do you do for fun? When was the last time you did it? Play does not have to be organized, it can be spontaneous. But it is necessary. It recharges your batteries. It connects you to the stuff the Universe is made of. If you are not having at least five minutes of fun every day, you are missing out. Your assignment for today is to have fun! Jump in a fountain, play tag, do cartwheels, walk on the beach, play on a swing set, chase squirrels… Something!
