Friday thoughts... one of the suggested ways of reducing carbon in the tourism industry is to encourage behaviour change, increase trip duration, and stay longer, which may mean fewer trips per year and more money spent in destination. The barrier I see to this is employers' annual leave policies; many companies have policies of no more than 10 working days at a time, which means long-haul travel is limited to 16 days max. As an employer, would you consider requests for longer blocks of leave? Particularly if you have your carbon reduction plans... As an employee, would you be prepared to challenge a leave policy and request longer leave based on the above information? Specific to Canada and our medical system are the following issues for most employers' Accommodation Processes: Asking a Physician to write a note proving the employee requires an accommodation - this immediately medicalizes the entire conversation and breaches the employee or prospective employee's privacy rights.
