For the past three years, Cassina has been communicating its perspective on sustainability in this document. Divided into four main sections, Sustainability, Product, People and Planet, the report recounts to the company’s stakeholders how it constantly invests in the development of innovative products and a production process attentive to environmental issues. A view that also extends to actions aimed at protecting the health and well-being of its employees, as well as building established relationships with the community. The sustainability innovations and initiatives going on in the manufacturing world right now are incredibly impressive! Lowering emissions in this sector is no easy feat, but there are a lot of examples out there of ingenuity and ambition, where companies have gone the extra mile to grapple with this all-important challenge and unravel the green opportunities on offer. A French saying that goes like this " En Avril ne te découvre pas d'un fil ", literally means that " in April don't uncover yourself by a thread ", meaning that although days are brighter, they are not warmer yet, so don't go out wearing lighter clothing as you might catch a cold... as I ironically did this week! In other words, don't be fooled by appearances. When it comes to beauty a lot of brands have used the 3R method (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) to upgrade their products portfolio to a more sustainable offering. However, the economic downturn and the increase cost of energy and materials are shrinking margins, and some brands may be backpedalling on their sustainability commitments. Remember, sustainability is a long term goal, and the short-term impact might be costly, while the long-term competitive advantage might be well underestimated. I recently attended the Net Zero Festival by BusinessGreen at the London Business Design Centre, where I engaged with a diverse crowd and various organizations such as WWF-UK, RSPB, and more. It's evident that sustainability initiatives by SMEs and suppliers often stem from requirements of larger organizations in the consumer-facing side of the supply chain. However, empowering SMEs with a range of sustainable initiatives to choose from can lead to more specific and impactful sustainability outcomes, instead of solely focusing on reporting metrics and KPIs across platforms. While organizational commitments to sustainability may vary, it is crucial to support those prioritizing sustainability to spearhead new initiatives that foster growth from the grassroots level to consumer-facing entities. This idea that growth toward sustainability can be from bottom up, stems from my conversations with different experts at the conference. Elemis partnered with Xampla, a UK startup, to develop a 21st century alternative to the plastic sachet, turning a waste stream into a potential future business model for Elemis. 2️⃣ No one knows where to start and Oriele was no different when the board asked her to take on responsibility for sustainability but start she did. Her guiding philosophy: progress over perfection. 3️⃣ Elemis is a beauty brand not a sustainability business but this conversations shows how those are NOT mutually exclusive. Elemis depends on nature for EVERY SINGLE one of their 800 ingredients - that’s why it’s worth not just protecting it but prioritising it hence their 60-year investment in soil regeneration. 4️⃣ The driver to change came directly from the top - but stakeholder engagement is crucial and not just with the workforce but with with suppliers and consumers too. The first step to engagement is understanding hence their focus on climate and sustainability education. 5️⃣ It started with just one person. Oriele. The key is to give agency to the entire workforce and for that a business needs green champions in every department. Sustainability also needs to be relatable and tangible to a particular team and culture. The free B Impact Assessment was a useful starting point for Elemis but so to were some of their bold, early, quick wins like removing all single-use spatulas, removing magnet-close tops and replacing 18-page manuals with QR codes.
