Construction of the New Wear Footbridge is already providing a significant boost to the local economy, new figures have revealed 🌉 Thanks to a series of initiatives led by lead contractor VolkerStevin, £3.1million worth of social value has been delivered to communities, demonstrating a lasting positive impact for locals, the natural environment and beyond. Since the start of construction in Spring 2023, 21 local people have secured jobs, four apprenticeship roles have been created, six work experience students supported and 66 hours of education engagement to local schools have been delivered. Procuring from local suppliers, stipulated as “high priority” by Sunderland City Council during the tender process, has also seen VolkerStevin spend over £1.8m with Sunderland businesses and a further £4.4m spent with small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs). https://lnkd.in/eN2PPr2r

Recent statistics show that **more than two in five apprentices** on standards fail to complete their qualifications. Additionally, **67% of bricklayers** report musculoskeletal disorders, with back injuries being the most prevalent. These challenges highlight the urgent need for better training programs and safer working conditions. Pink Floyd wanted everybody to train as bricklayers! I could have just left that there but I should explain 🤣 “Teacher leave them kids alone”- this is about the University state of education where everybody needs a degree and this is the constant push from education to go this road. “Another brick in the wall”- again obviously it’s highlighting that bricks should be put in walls, therefore the kids in the song need to be putting bricks in walls- therefore they should be bricklayers! Ok I have missed every other word out of the song to get to the point that I wanted to make. I like the image of the teacher pushing the kids through the grinder and coming out with the same old mush, so we need to open education to the idea of trades, to the idea of apprenticeships. I think the former apprentice Minister Rt Hon Robert Halfon did an amazing job but still lots to do. Lots know my passion on wanting to get to schools early as construction working together, but I need to write down a plan- and I will get to it. But ideas for this plan??- how do we stop the focus on everybody doing a degree- I am not saying nobody does a degree or that everybody goes into construction 🤣- but not everyone needs to, and how do we work together as construction to achieve this?
