Violence against women and girls A worsening global emergency that demands urgent action from governments Violence against women and girls is a national emergency in England and Wales according to a recent disturbing analysis by the National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC), which described an estimated 3000 violent offences against women and girls daily.1 Every three days, at least one of these offences is likely to be homicide.2 Considering that many crimes go unreported, the NPCC’s findings probably underestimate the full scale of the problem. https://lnkd.in/egR4XBj3

Globally, a woman is killed every 10 minutes by an intimate partner or family member—more than 51,000 women and girls each year. This sobering statistic from the UN Women “Femicides in 2023” report highlights the ongoing crisis of violence against women worldwide, with more than 1 in 4 of these women having previously reported abuse by their killers. Locally, in Chicago, Karina Gonzalez’s tragic death in 2023 brings this issue to the forefront. Despite having an order of protection in place, Karina was killed by her estranged husband, who still had access to firearms. This has led to the introduction of #KarinasBill, legislation that aims to clarify and strengthen the law to require a firearm be removed when a #domesticviolence survivor is granted the firearm remedy in an order of protection. Karina’s story is a stark reminder of how often unaddressed abuse escalates into fatal violence, emphasizing the need for improved systems to protect women and girls. Day 8 of #16daysofactivism: Although this period of time is about Violence Against Women and Girls, it's important to remember that at least 1 in 7 of domestic abuse cases are men. Statistics show that in the year ending June 2024, Greater Manchester Police (GMP) recorded 9,904 offences of rape and sexual assault, of which 1,836 (one in five) related to male victims. The average time taken by male victims to report sexual assault to police is four years and less than four percent of reports result in a charge. Rise in reports of violence against women on transport A BBC article from August this year [ https://lnkd.in/eHnWq-_4] reported that The number of recorded violent crimes against women and girls on the transport network has risen in the past year by 20% "Safeguarding minister Jess Phillips said: "Whether these figures reflect an increase in reporting, an increase in the volume of crime, or a combination of the two, one thing is clear: The level of violence, harassment and sexual offences that women and girls are facing when using the transport network is completely unacceptable, and can not be allowed to go unchallenged." We totally agree and whatever the reason for the increase, the fact is this figures should be going DOWN in civilised society. A 20% increase is massive and of course will be just a fraction of the actual number of offences. It's time to take action! Hidden homicides - when there are failings in the system there can be a lack of professional curiosity, forensic pathology, forensic digital review. When there is a gap in specialist knowledge, red flags are missed. The below two cases in Australia discuss feelings of entrapment, loss of hope and victims living in a ‘virtual jail’ before their deaths. Every incident needs a forensic timeline review before conclusions are reached - does the evidence show that there was coercion, manipulation, isolation, psychological and physical abuse? Questions must be asked!

As part of the London police force's new plan, A New Met for London, the Metropolitan Police is re-prioritising how it protects the public from harm, safeguards the vulnerable, and combats violence against women and girls. The V100 program has already resulted in the conviction of eight individuals within three months of its establishment, aligning with efforts outlined in the Violence Against Women and Girls Action Plan, aiming to enhance women and girls' protection and trust in the Met. The plan lays out 10 commitments across three different areas – building trust and confidence, “the relentless pursuit of perpetrators” and safer spaces. Notably, there has been a 41% increase in charged rape and serious sexual offense cases compared to the previous year in London. Deputy Assistant Commissioner Helen Millichap emphasised the importance of actions over words in the Met's efforts to ensure women and girls' safety.
