Today marks the official end of the 2nd season of the БУДЬ/BE project. Being launched by INSCIENCE and Digitizing.Space , БУДЬ/BE is a mentoring program designed to help Ukrainian women to get a job in it and creative industries. This program is for women who have lost their jobs due to the war and are looking for new opportunities, whether they are in Ukraine or are displaced. I have been a part of this program on a volunteer basis for the 2nd year in a row, since its launch. As part of the project, we helped with CVs, portfolios, interview preparation, and training. As the women's group curator, I was responsible for helping mentees identify transferable skills, areas for improvement, resources for job searching, and specific examples. We were partners in tracking their progress on numbers of vacancies applied, feedback received both after the screening or on their test tasks. I held dozens of meetings as a curator and conducted a webinar on "Professional Roles in Marketing." The preparation of the BE project was made possible thanks to the support of the USAID Program "Competitive Economy of Ukraine." This year, I noted two positive changes. Firstly, we had experts from other countries join as curators and mentors. Secondly, there were more men among the curators and mentors compared to last year. Last year, I was fortunate to hire one of my mentees. She met my expectations, reaffirming my belief in hiring interns and juniors. I believe, and have seen in practice, that investments in training these individuals pay off well for businesses. Thank you to the organizers for the opportunity to contribute in such an impactful way. As 2024 comes to a close, I’m reflecting on an incredible year of growth, learning, and giving back. It’s been a year of impactful experiences, and I’m grateful for the opportunities to contribute, connect, and expand my horizons. Some highlights from this year: Panel Member at Winnie Tech Talk: I had the privilege of speaking at the Winnie Tech Talk seminar, advocating for women and girls in tech, organized by the InnVille Foundation. It was inspiring to witness the drive and passion of young women entering the tech space. Spoke on X Spaces on MIL via invitation from the Institute of Public Relations (IPR) Ghana UniMAC-IJ Chapter Advisory Board Selections: I was honored to interview and select young people who are serving as Advisory Board Members under the UNICEF Ghana and Ghla Youth Engagement Center Project. It was a fulfilling experience to help shape the future of youth engagement. Joined Women in PR Ghana: Officially becoming a member of Women in PR Ghana was a step forward in my professional journey. The support and inspiration I’ve received from industry-leading women have been invaluable. Career Development Seminars: With my amazing team, we organized career development seminars for young people. I’m proud of the impact we made, helping shape the career paths of many. Mentoring in Rural Communities: I had the chance to mentor young people in rural communities, helping them navigate their education and career paths. The experience was humbling and rewarding. Learning from Industry Experts: I attended the Women in PR Summit and several Corporate Communication Webinars, learning from experienced communication professionals and gaining new insights into the industry. Moderated the Central Regional Annual Quiz: Being a moderator at the Central Regional Annual Quiz competition was a fun and challenging experience. Seeing the students' enthusiasm for knowledge was truly inspiring. Master's Degree Achievement: To top it all off, I completed my Master’s Degree! It’s been a journey of hard work and persistence, and I’m grateful for the support and guidance along the way. Thank you to everyone who supported, mentored, and worked with me this year. In 2024 BaseKit partnered with Groundbreaker to help support tech careers for women in Africa. We gifted lifetime subscriptions for every woman participating in the Groundbreaker Talents program, to help them learn how to create a website during their program and later showcase an online portfolio of their skills to kickstart a successful career in the tech industry. 100% of the graduates from cohort 1 found a job in Uganda within weeks of graduating in the summer last year. Here Daphine Nambafu, a recent graduate of cohort 2 in December 2024 and one of the first to use BaseKit as part of the program, shares her experience of using our software to build a website to showcase her work. "BaseKit has been a great tool for creating a personal website that reflects my journey and aspirations. With its user-friendly features, I designed a professional platform with an eye-catching landing page, shared my passion for tech, showcased my projects in an organised layout, and made it easy for employers to connect with me. From adding visuals and smooth navigation to including a downloadable CV and a contact form, BaseKit made the process simple and helped me build a website that tells my story effectively." Here we are, heading to Bălți 🚗for the Tech Women Moldova conference, ready and excited! New roles are emerging, some are disappearing, and some are evolving. My personal journey taught me this: it's crucial to understand, and truly feel, what your purpose and passion are. What’s that one thing you are passionate about and can do for free? I will go first. For me, it's youth empowerment and giving them access to growth opportunities. This was why months ago when The Omniverse Africa asked me to moderate a panel session on the job interest of Gen Z and Millennials VS Boomers in one of the biggest tech events in the country, it was a no-brainer. We had an exciting conversation focused on the importance of mentorship and collaboration and the need for adaptability and skill development to succeed in the gig economy. And I strongly believe that these are key values that every young person must hold dear to achieve their goals and access employment opportunities.
