https://lnkd.in/dSAMB6hR I’m running a masterclass on walkable, fine-grained, mixed-use, transit oriented development on Day 3 of this conference, which leaves me free to enjoy the day 1 and day 2 presentations; and they are already showcasing interesting projects that highlight important issues. I’ve been asked why I put the effort into going to conferences. My answer is that to learn about houses, one must experience many houses; it’s the same for cities.

Navigating the Conference Maze Just read an eye-opening article by Christine Ro in Nature about the rise of "predatory conferences." As someone who's attended my fair share of industry events, this resonated and got me thinking: • Not all conferences are created equal. Some are outright scams, designed to make money off unsuspecting professionals and researchers. • It's not just newbies who get caught out! It's easy to feel "honored" to be invited as a speaker! • These sham events waste valuable time and damage scientific credibility: the costs go beyond just money. • Many such conferences popped up post-pandemic, the line between legitimate and questionable events has blurred, making it harder to spot the fakes. It's got me reflecting on my own experiences. While I've been fortunate to avoid these obvious scams, I've definitely attended some conferences that left me wondering if they were worth the time and money. We certainly need to be more discerning as conferences can be incredible opportunities for learning and networking, but they're also significant investments. Skaiste Knyzaite (Futurae Media) is one of the masterminds behind four international, premium conference brands: Energy Tech Summit Food Tech Congress Health Tech Forward Urban Tech Forward Two days ago, during the first day of Food Tech Congress 2024, I had this spontaneous idea to interview Skaiste around a number of topics where I find her views and international experience in organizing large, premium conferences especially interesting. To give you an idea of how spontaneous and unrehearsed our interview was, Skaiste knew none of the questions I asked her in advance 👏 Also, I literally wrote to Skaiste on LinkedIn with this "quick interview proposal" less than 30 minutes before the interview itself. Lastly, we recorded it without any cuts or second/third attempts. It actually takes courage and open-mindedness to do it this way, as I'm sure many of you know! 👏👏👏 Having worked with Skaiste on most of the listed formats (as #ConferenceHost #Emcee), for over 2 years now, I decided to ask her a few spontaneous questions about the #EventIndustry itself, about country-specific differences and the bidding/event-preparation process. We covered the following areas: 👉 Event brands in Europe (4 industries) 👉 International event organizer perspective (comparative) 👉 How do host countries/cities/venues/ecosystems support the process? 👉 Value proposition vs. value generation 👉 From Poland to Bilbao and Barcelona 👉 Who contacts whom, when and how. 👉 Unique Value Proposition vs. Cost Competitiveness 👉 The magic ingredients: industry specific, expo zone, highly customized, technologically-enhanced, great off-site experiences, premium, focus on business networking & new business development 👉 Local governments, hospitality and reputation: Poland vs. other destinations (“a little bit of attention”) 👉 The ecosystem: incubators, accelerators, startups, networking platforms 👉 The bottlenecks: unique locations awareness (incl. intuitive access to infrastructure information) 👉 "The Copenhagen Way” Poland Convention Bureau, Grow with Warsaw, Kraków Convention Bureau, Polish National Tourist Office, Polish Tourism Organisation, SKKP | Stowarzyszenie Konferencje i Kongresy w Polsce

My “There’s been a lot of talk about conferences” post. Conferences should add value, case closed. I’m impressed with posts emphasizing that strategy and execution are required on the participant’s end. You can’t just show up and expect connections and insights to appear out of thin air. However, if your conference isn’t doing everything they can to facilitate meaningful networking, push content forward, and create a valuable experience, you absolutely have the right to ask why not. A conference’s purpose is to bring together large amounts of people, and add value. As we have all know in business, you can never make everyone happy. Many parties have conflicting interests, and all organizers must thoughtfully weave this quilt. It is the organizer's responsibility to do everything they can to serve each party, and continuously push the boundaries of innovation and value creation. Cheers to the real estate industry that really cares about these things and invests in community and connections.
