FARM BIOGAS CONFERENCE 2024 - Thursday the 28th of November 2024 The Small Biogas Demonstration Programme (SBDP) commenced in 2019 to establish the potential for farm scale biogas plants on farms. Over the course of the project, an operational biogas plant has been developed. The SBDP project has assessed all aspects of this scale of biogas production, including opportunities and challenges. Reporting from the National Farm Biogas Conference last week in Ashtown, Dublin at the Teagasc Food & Research Centre. The day began with an opening welcome by Seán Finan, CEO of Irish Bioenergy Association (IrBEA). He set the stage for a comprehensive exploration of the farm-scale biogas sector in Ireland. The first session, focused on the role and potential of farm-scale biogas, it featured a series of informative presentations from Redmond McEvoy from the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine who outlined how biogas fits into the broader agricultural policy, while Seán Finan presented key findings and conclusions from the EIP-AGRI Small Biogas Demonstration Programme (SBDP). Noel Gavigan, IrBEA’s Technical Executive, addressed the technical, policy, and economic aspects of farm-scale biogas, complimented by Barry Caslin of Teagasc who began with a clear and concise explanation of the fundamental mechanics and operation of a biogas plant. He then went on to discuss the essential factors required to foster a thriving and sustainable biogas sector. A panel discussion followed, showcasing perspectives from the Brendan Gildea from Riverview Farm who was the EIP grant recipient and technology provider Ben Sage from Tank Storage Solutions After lunch, the second session delved into research and commercial advancements in biogas production. Dr. Ciara Beausang of Teagasc highlighted ongoing research into renewable gas, while FAYOLLE Joseph of Biolectric examined small-scale biogas systems across the UK and EU. Chris Johnston from Agri-Food and Biosciences Institute provided an update on Northern Ireland’s biogas progress, emphasising nutrient management and the use of slurry and digestate separation techniques. The session culminated in a dynamic panel discussion on evolving developments, with insights from industry leaders including Seamus Gallagher (AGRIGAS LIMITED), Dr. Stephen Nolan (GlasPort Bio). Finding sustainable alternatives to oil is something we should all appreciate. CSIRO's research will help address concerns I've read earlier about crops being solely use for biofuel production, now it appears we can take the scrap from normal faming and turn it into biofuels! Advanced Biogas production is a great way to reduce GHG emissions fast

Suomen Lantakaasu is investing more than EUR 80 million in Kiuruvesi, Finland biogas plant project. The investment covers the construction of the biogas plant and the liquefaction unit. The plant will be completed in 2026 and it will produce renewable liquefied biogas from cattle farm manure in Upper Savo and from other agricultural and food industry byproducts. The plant will liquefy about 125 GWh of biogas per year, which is equivalent to the estimated annual fuel consumption of 250 heavy-duty vehicles. The liquefied biogas will be distributed through St1’s distribution network. “Particularly in heavy transport, biogas is an important solution for reducing emissions, as it is difficult to fully electrify heavy transport. Biogas production could be increased significantly in Finland”, says Matti Oksanen, Head of Growth at St1 Biokraft. Read more in the press release ⬇ #biogas #renewableenergy
