Harnessing Agro-Residue for BioCNG: Addressing India's Crop Burning Crisis India faces a significant environmental challenge with the widespread practice of crop residue burning, particularly in states like Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh. Every year, millions of tons of agricultural waste are burned, releasing harmful pollutants into the air and contributing to severe air quality issues. However, this agro-residue holds immense potential as a valuable resource for producing BioCNG, offering a sustainable solution to this pressing problem. By converting agricultural waste into BioCNG, India can not only reduce its dependence on fossil fuels but also tackle the environmental impact of crop burning. The process involves collecting agro-residue, such as paddy straw and sugarcane bagasse, and processing it into compressed biogas. This clean, renewable energy source can power vehicles, industries, and even households, providing a much-needed energy boost for rural India. According to the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), India produces approximately 500 million tons of crop residue annually. If just 25% of this residue is converted into BioCNG, it could generate around 18,000 million cubic meters of BioCNG annually, significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions and providing an eco-friendly alternative to traditional fuels. The benefits extend beyond environmental impact; farmers can also gain economically by selling their crop residue instead of burning it. The initiative is expected to significantly reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by converting organic waste into biogas and a nutrient-rich byproduct (slurry) that can be used as fertilizer. ♻️ For smallholders, procuring the biogas units independently was not financially feasible. To address this, we have integrated a carbon credit programme in this ongoing project, creating a sustainable solution for small farmers. 👩🌾 👨🌾 Each biogas unit installed in the project areas has a capacity of 2 cubic metres. With an average usage of about 150 days per year, each unit can potentially generate 300 cubic meters of biogas in a year. Furthermore, by utilizing manure and food waste, the units prevent nitrogen pollution and runoff into water resources. As we now blend nearly 16.9% ethanol and are on way to meet E20 target and beyond, the quest for newer sources of ethanol continues. Seaweed is one such innovative source. Farming about 7.5% of India’s exclusive economic zone could produce enough feedstock to replace 300 million tons of crude oil equivalent. Happy to note that by bringing in mechanization into Tropical seaweed farming, Sea6Energy is able to farm large areas of the Ocean by improving the productivity per person and enabling farming in deeper waters.
