The CPUC Decision this bill would reverse showed a clear lack of systems design thinking. First the analysis behind gutting virtual net metering treated schools the same as residential customers. Second, and more importantly, the Decision focused only on a single policy objective, reducing "cost shift", instead of seeing the whole picture of related objectives, like school electrification and converting to electric school buses https://lnkd.in/gHD3a2kB

Energy Star reports that America's 17,450 K-12 school districts spend over $6 billion annually on energy alone. While upgrading buildings to reduce these costs can be expensive, opting for a 100% remote Tenurgy utility audit is both free and risk-free. This audit can identify billing inaccuracies and potentially save your school district significant energy costs. With these savings, districts like Detroit Country Day, which saves $120,000 annually thanks to a Tenurgy audit, can reinvest in building improvements, new technology, and educational resources. Imagine what your district could achieve with additional funds. Don't miss the opportunity to join the growing list of schools saving on their utility, telecommunications, and waste/water expenses. From Elizabeth Liedel Turnbull of Franklin Energy on Energy Central: "Good news for the nation’s path to electrification: in May, the U.S. EPA announced nearly $900 million in rebates for 3,400 clean school buses in 530 school districts across the country. Excitingly, a whopping 92% of these buses will be electric, which are better for the climate and kids’ health. And this is just the latest round of funding that’s been made available to transform the country’s school bus fleet. To date, through a combination of grant and rebate funding, the EPA has awarded almost $3 billion to fund approximately 8,500 school bus replacements at over 1,000 schools. The timing couldn’t be better. Not only are electric school buses more widely available than they’ve ever been, but as utilities encourage individuals to make the switch to electric vehicles, the opportunity to support their local school districts is a no-brainer." An important bill still surviving the legislative culling process, SB 1374 will enable schools and multi-family housing to share electricity produced on-site, reversing an insane, punitive ruling by CPUC early this year. Earlier versions of the bill also allowed farms to do the same, a perfectly sensible arrangement given the fact that electricity actually flows from local supply to local demand, but for some reason a bill amendment excluded farms. Please ask your legislators to support SB 1374.
California's #SB1374 unlocks solar power to cut school energy bills, which have become the second largest expenditure for school districts after teacher and staff salaries. 🌞 Closing an unfair loophole in existing rules lets districts maximize savings & invest in students, not utility bills. #CAleg, support our schools: #PassSB1374! California friends, repost this message, tag your Assemblymember, and tell them why you support SB 1374 and #SolarForSchools! https://lnkd.in/gcnhHAXd

We were moved by the perspective shared in this article by the Presidents of the Oakland Unified School District and the Clovis Unified School District Boards of Education. 👏 Understanding how the CPUC’s decisions impact school budgets, and ultimately the education of California’s children, is only one of the motivating factors behind #SenateBill1374! Read on for more and let your representatives know that you support this bill! 🙌 What you need to know: 🔌 Electricity is the 2nd largest expense for schools, cutting into the already limited budget available for staff salaries, supplies, and operations. 🔌 Solar used to be a viable option to help schools cut down on utility bills. 🔌 The VNEM Successor Tariff no longer allows properties with multiple meters (including schools, multifamily buildings, and multi-unit commercial properties) to apply all of their solar power across multiple meters. 🔌 Any excess solar is sold to the utility at a discounted rate, only to be bought back for consumption at the full retail rate. This means that schools (and other multi-meter properties) can’t justify the cost of solar and have no relief from the constantly increasing utility rates! ☀️ Enter SB 1374 thanks to Sen. Josh Becker ☀️ Senate Bill 1374 offers hope, aiming to restore solar incentives! With #SB1374, multi-meter properties would receive full retail credit on utility bills for all of their solar energy. Let's support this bill and ensure a brighter future for our schools, our children, and our climate. Reach out to your representatives today! #SupportSB1374 #SolarForAll https://lnkd.in/ev6tyuhy

"In the U.S., more than 800 K-12 schools added new solar arrays in 2022-23, and over the last 10 years, the amount of solar capacity at K-12 schools has more than quadrupled, according to a report by Generation180." Energy cost is one of the highest expenses for school districts in Pennsylvania, and state Rep. Elizabeth Fiedler, D-Philadelphia, prime sponsor of Solar for Schools – a bill that passed with bipartisan support and was signed into law by Gov. Josh Shapiro – said on-site solar can save school districts millions of dollars in energy bills over the life of the project, while lowering costs for taxpayers, creating good-paying jobs, and contributing to a healthier planet. https://hubs.ly/Q02Nb2WX0

I haven't read a newspaper in the last 6 months without seeing a mention of rising costs for business. We are no different and are experiencing the same. This theme has however forced us to take a different approach to the energy market, and so we are trying to affect change on a longer timeframe. If we can incrementally save businesses money on the core cost centres we can actually make an impact on, then over a longer timeframe we should see continuous improvement in profitability. In some cases, this approach produces great results, like our clients at Radford College, where we were able to generate savings of $200,000 on their next 2-year electricity supply contract. Here is a case study outlining our work - https://lnkd.in/gADNCkJg Thank you to David Buley and the team at Association of Independent Schools of NSW for allowing us to present at your recent conference and add some value for your members.
