One of the big questions on my mind with our recent #socialmedia research at Phocuswright/Northstar Travel Group is how much of its impact is invisible. Spoiler? It's a LOT. Because so many social travel conversions are categorical decisions, not brand ones. Things like: - What mode of transportation to take (67% of U.S. users with a transportation #conversion made this type of decision) - What type of lodging to stay in, e.g., hotel vs. STR (51% of U.S. lodging converters) - What type of activity to do (63% of U.S. T&A converters on social made a call like this. I thought Douglas Quinby would find it interesting that there is so much more social conversion of activity types than tours) For collective segments, this can be great news about the power of social channels. But for specific brands, there's a whole separate challenge to make sure that your company, not just your category, is memorable to consumers.
