What would a world without clean freshwater water look like? In a context of enhanced climate change, rapid urbanization and increased water pollution, concerns around water security have come to the forefront of discussions in academic, political and every-day circles. For landlocked countries with dry climates like Mongolia, this conversation is of paramount importance.

“A report by the World Resources Institute (WRI) estimates that MENA is home to 13 of the 15 most water-stressed countries in the world, with 83 percent of the region’s population experiencing extreme water stress.” A huge part of addressing water scarcity issues in the MENA region will be improving water management everywhere. If we want to best adapt to the climate change and eventually prevent water scarcity from becoming even more prevalent, we must invest our time, energy, and money into positively investing in the future of water. This can be everything from doubling down on water conservation to investing in water sustainability projects. #MENA #WaterScarcity #MiddleEast #WaterStress #FutureOfWater #WaterSustainability

💧 One of the biggest impacts of #climatechange will be on the #watercycle. Dry places will get drier, wet places will get wetter, droughts and floods will drastically increase, and the climate will become more unpredictable. As a result, #watersecurity will continue to deteriorate around the world. ❌ Yet water security is still too often left out of key adaptation decisions. 🔍 This report from the University of Oxford’s REACH | Water Security programme synthesises 6 years of research led in Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia, exploring the relationship between water security, climate and climate adaptation decisions. 💡 The main takeaway? Investing in the #resilience of water resources, services and systems is key to prevent, minimise and address the loss and damage from #climateshocks. A green deal to transform the Middle East? Middle Eastern governments can safeguard revenue flows in the long term and ensure the region remains competitive by offering green incentives, says a report from PwC Middle East. Renewed interest in green incentives inspired by the European Green Deal could see 2023 become the region’s most environmentally transformative year yet. Read how the Middle East is tackling one of its biggest climate challenges – water scarcity – in our Abdul Latif Jameel Perspectives article. https://lnkd.in/dBxQMH9y #AbdulLatifJameel #Jameel #JameelEnergyEnvironment #MiddleEast #MENA #PwC #environment #greendeal #climatechange #climateaction #waterscarcity #watersecurity

Access requires a sustained, collective effort. World Water Day on 22 March, an annual United Nations observance day, seeks to highlight the importance of water and the sustainable and equitable management thereof. Despite efforts over the past two decades to address infrastructure needs, South Africa’s water systems are now facing a crisis marked by inefficiencies, water scarcity, and the effects of climate change. The urgent need for investment in water infrastructure is evident, with billions required over the next decade to upgrade existing systems and build new infrastructure to support the growing population and economy. I had the privilege of attending an insightful panel on the vital topic of "Mediterranean water strategy" at my university Paris-Dauphine within the event Spring University tackling this year "The Adaptation and Mitigation of Climate Change in the Mediterranean". I was captivated by the title of the panel to attend because I wanted to gain a comprehensive understanding of the pressing challenges and innovative solutions in Mediterranean water management. As water scarcity becomes increasingly urgent in the region and in Tunisia specifically, it's crucial to explore proactive strategies for sustainable use. Leaders such as Catherine Lagneau, Abderrahmen Ouasli, and Amel Hamza-Chaffai provided invaluable insights, emphasizing the urgency of sustainable water management and the different used ways to do so with the prons and cons of each and every tool. #Water #Strategy #Mediterranean #Sustainability

#ImpactandMore The International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) and the World Resources Institute (WRI) have launched a three year project that will use nature-based solutions to undertake watershed restoration and #climatechange adaptation actions in cities in sub-Saharan Africa. By focusing on actions that restore #naturalsolutions for water management by engaging women and vulnerable communities, the project will mitigate climate change through a gender lens. It seeks to demonstrate the possibility of a ‘triple win’ for climate, society, and biodiversity. The three-year project, which was launched last month, is funded by Global Affairs Canada | Affaires mondiales Canada through an award of US$21 million that will advance climate adaptation in African cities through nature-based solutions.
