Happy Martin Luther King Jr Day! Today commemorates and honors Martin Luther King Jr, a Baptist minister and prominent leader in the Civil Rights Movement. He was a master orator, known for his historic speeches, and won the Noble Peace Prize in 1964. While many people know about his historic "I Have A Dream" speech and learned that he encouraged non-violent protesting, his actions and words are quite often taken out of context. MLK Jr went through many phases of beliefs regarding civil rights and the way in which they should be achieved, but he did believe in true equity and the eradication of systemic racism. While many will utilize some of his words that are purposefully elevated to support the agenda of systemic oppression, we have chosen some of our favorite, lesser known quotes. In the context of global tragedies occurring in the present day, his words ring truer and more clear than ever. “The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy. The true neighbor will risk his position, his prestige, and even his life for the welfare of others.” We must all spend some time today reflecting on topics such as equity, freedom, and systemic oppression. Today we also give thanks to Dr. King for being one of the many leaders who have paved the way for all of us. Let us know what you'll be reflecting on today! Happy MLK Jr Day. #ERGs #MLKDay #MLKJr #MartinLutherKingJrDay #DEI #Equity
