The rise threatens to complicate the energy transition and efforts to shut down fossil fuel power plants, though technology companies prefer clean energy for their data centers. Amazon.com Inc., Alphabet Inc.’s Google and Microsoft Corp. have each announced nuclear deals in the past month that aim to power their operations with carbon-free generation. “The last time the US electricity industry saw unexpected new demand growth like this was during World War II,” Seiple said in a statement. That’s when manufacturing output tripled and electricity demand rose 60% between 1939 and 1944. DOE offers $900M for next-generation small modular reactors. The U.S. Department of Energy said it expects to announce an official solicitation and open up applications in late summer or fall. The U.S. Department of Energy announced Monday that it will provide $900 million of funding from the bipartisan infrastructure law to support the deployment of light-water small modular reactors. The department will give up to $800 million to “up to two first-mover teams of utility, reactor vendor, constructor, and end-users or power off-takers committed to deploying a first plant while at the same time facilitating a multi-reactor, Gen III+ SMR. In a second round of funding, DOE will award up to $100 million to fix “key gaps” troubling the domestic nuclear industry in areas including design, licensing, supplier development and site preparation, with the goal of spurring additional Gen III+ small modular reactor deployments. A pragmatic strategy towards energy could enhance the EU's competitiveness, according to GIE. A new study finds that Virginia’s data centers could triple Virginia’s electricity demand over the next 15 years, requiring a new gas power plant to be built every 18 months along with massive buildouts of renewable and nuclear energy projects and transmission infrastructure. Almost all of the load growth is from data centers, practically none is from building or vehicle electrification.

Yesterday the UK National Energy System Operator (NESO) issued a Notice that the amount of Electricity Demand would outstrip Supply available by 4:30pm and if no action was taken blackouts across the network would occur. The shortfall was caused by a combination of demand from Ireland and Northern Europe across the interconnectors as well as unusually low levels of wind across the UK leading to a shortfall in wind generation. With over £45bn invested in over 11,000 wind turbines the UK now relies on wind for over 25% of our #electricity generation. This incredible investment and expansion in #renewableenergy is critical to the UK achieving it's #NetZero goals over the coming years, however it also creates a new set of challenges. The signal by NESO resulted in the expected response from the market with a switch in flows from Europe through the interconnectors and #Gas fired power stepping in to meet demand. Today we have seen reports across the UK Media and calls from market commentators to tackle the Britain's critical vulnerability to a future energy crisis driven by our dependency on Gas when renewables fall short. Tom Greatrex Chief Executive of the Nuclear Industry Association did a great job in highlighting the importance of new nuclear in our energy mix when he said: “Without fresh investment and decisions on new nuclear projects these warnings will become more commonplace and we will have to continue relying on volatile gas markets to fill the gaps in supply, threatening out energy security and driving up bills and emissions.” As the global energy market continues to reshape itself, through expansion of #renewablegeneration, #nuclear and #hydrogen our industry faces massive challenges with skills shortages across all areas from Engineering, Data Science and Project Management to Logistics, Supply Chain Management and Finance.
