Who knew ex offenders would make such great work colleagues? Well we did 🙋♂️ 🤷♂️...… as well as many other companies across the UK who over the last few years have actively fought to make sure that people get a 2nd chance in life, after difficult times during their life. Ex prisoners aren't looking for hand outs or a free pass, they are looking for a chance to prove what they are really worth. Bakers Environmental Solutions have been employing ex offenders for years, along with others across the UK like Timpsons Limited and Shoezone Retail Limited, among many, many others, but we need more to get involved! 🤝 Our Heads of Education, Skills and Work (HoESW) roadshows have provided a fantastic opportunity to hear from colleagues and gather feedback on how we can continue improving HMPPS’ employment systems to increase the number of prison leavers securing jobs on release. From Prison Employment Leads to Employment Hubs, we spoke with HoESWs about their views on these initiatives, how they are working in their prisons and what we can do to support them in their roles. This included: ✅ providing overviews of the responsibilities of key staff 💬 improving staff and prisoner communication channels 📊 creating easier access to data surrounding employment outcomes 📚 offering ‘teach in’ sessions for updates in the digital and data space As the roadshows continue, we look forward to working with HoESWs to reinforce the important link between work and education, and to reduce reoffending. 🤝Employment Advisory Boards (EABs) provide a platform for business leaders, HM Prison and Probation Service staff and stakeholders to improve the training and employment offer to prisoners. Lynne Kennedy and Robert Cooke from Greene King lead Greene King’s ‘Releasing Potential’ Programme, which supports prison leavers into employment on release. They also Chair the EABs at HMPs Durham and Altcourse. Lynne told us: “At HMP Durham, we work together to pilot new ways of working, including creating EAB steering groups to focus on key segments of a prisoner’s resettlement journey. Progress is reported at each EAB meeting to seek advice. We’re in our early days, but already starting to see green shoots.” 🌱 Robert said: “Previously, employers were getting frustrated if prisons couldn’t quickly find appropriate candidates. Following this feedback, we supported PELs to find and focus specifically on individuals who are work ready.” ✅ Examples like this show that through the support provided by EAB members, that every small win adds up to bigger results and is collectively making a difference to people's lives. 🌟 Highlighting an inspiring initiative today - National Highways is part of a new programme to rehabilitate ex-prisoners and address skills shortages. Employment Councils, backed by reducing reoffending minister Lord James Timpson, support offenders serving sentences in the community by integrating them into the workforce. The success of prison Employment Advisory Boards shows the powerful impact employment can have. Employing ex-offenders also benefits businesses. The Ministry of Justice shares that 90% of companies employing ex-offenders find them motivated and trustworthy. Employment Councils will work with probation staff and local employers for successful placements. Notably, National Highways' Lower Thames Crossing project launched a Skills Hub pilot last October, providing training for those on day release from Kent-based prisons. This partnership with Gallagher Group and Flannery Plant Hire will expand with more Skills Hubs across Kent and Essex in 2025. ‘Transformative’: More college programs are slowly coming into prisons. Officials from state corrections agencies in Maryland, Michigan, and Wisconsin report that since Pell grants became available, more colleges and universities have shown interest in establishing prison education programs. Since last summer, 44 state corrections agencies and the federal Bureau of Prisons have developed systems to approve these programs, according to the Vera Institute of Justice.
