Breaking Down Barriers for the Next Generation! ↴ Thanks to additional funding through a three-year partnership with Nuclear Waste Services, we’ve been able to provide extra support to young people, both before and during the Dream Placement application process. 𝗪𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗽𝘀: This autumn, we worked with 69 hard-to-reach young people across Cumbria. Five years ago, the thought of interviewing was super nerve-racking but now I jump at the chance! And to be completely transparent, interviews can still feel scray, whether you’re the one asking the questions or answering them. As the interviee you might be thinking ❓ Will I trip over my words? ❓ Forget what I was going to say? ❓ Say the wrong thing? I’ve learned a few tricks to make the process smoother and more enjoyable for everyone involved. ✔️ Plan questions in advance ✔️ Share those questions with the interviewee beforehand to help them feel confident and prepared ✔️ Keep the conversation fun and natural ✔️ Reassure them that mistakes don’t matter—editing is magic! I recently had the pleasure of interviewing Tracy Badham, MSc about the incredible impact of the Dream Placement programme. Meet your Executive Committee! Mechelle Stanton, WiNUP Treasurer and Employee Development Specialist at the Institute of Nuclear Power Operations (INPO), isn’t your typical corporate superhero. She doesn’t wear a cape, but she does wield the power to keep nuclear power safe and reliable. Let’s dive into her fascinating story. The Power Connector: Mechelle’s mission is to bridge the gap between knowledge and action. She ensures that nuclear power professionals have the skills and information they need. Whether it’s closing knowledge gaps, enhancing skills, or ensuring compliance, Mechelle is the go-to person. She manages the budget for Employee Development, making sure that everyone has access to the right tools and information. The 30-Year Veteran: With over 30 years of training and development experience, Mechelle is a seasoned pro. Her expertise extends beyond technical training; she’s also responsible for the Civil Treatment program, cultural awareness, and coaching. If you need a crash course in nuclear etiquette, Mechelle’s got your back. The Committee Maven: Mechelle isn’t just a one-woman show. She’s deeply involved in the Atlanta Chapter of WiNUP (Women’s International Network of Utility Professionals). She has served as treasurer, secretary, vice chair, chair, and chapter international board representative. But that’s not all – she’s served on the International Fellowship committee, the Newsletter committee, the Chapter Achievement committee, the Nominating committee, the STEM committee, the Social Justice Team, and the Century Club committee. Phew! If that’s not enough, she is currently the Treasurer of WiNUP, serves on the board as an advisor for Real Women Helping Women and Youth, and active member of Toastmasters International. Mechelle’s calendar must be color-coded chaos. The Grandmother Extraordinaire: When she’s not juggling committees, boards, and budgets, Mechelle wears her grandmother hat. She’s the proud matriarch of a clan that could rival a small village. Ten wonderful grandchildren keep her on her toes. And what does she do to unwind? Travel? Ski? Nope. Mechelle’s secret superpower is “chillaxing.” Translation: doing absolutely nothing. It’s an art form, really. So, next time you think about Mechelle Stanton, remember the unsung hero who keeps things humming, committees thriving, and grandkids smiling. We're proud to have this superhero on WiNUP's team!

Working with the nuclear industry has been one of the high points of my time in Cumbria.

Being a military spouse comes with challenges, one of them being constant relocations and not being able to put down roots. Through them, I had the opportunity to be exposed to a variety of industries, countries and cultures, which taught me about resilience, adaptability and applying lessons learned and best practices across the board. It also translated into great learning experiences and amazing relationships built. As we navigate the rapidly evolving landscape of the nuclear and net-zero industries, one thing is clear: our future hinges on the talent we cultivate today. Building resilience in our workforce is essential for navigating the challenges of tomorrow.
