My entrepreneurial journey so far: 𝟮𝟬𝟭𝟴: Deepfakes emerge, amplifying the problem of fake news 𝟮𝟬𝟭𝟴: Co-founded Defudger, a synthetic media detection service, with the goal of helping society 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟬: Defudger failed. No one was willing to pay for our service 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟬: Founded Colossyan, using what I learned from Defudger 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟭: Raised a pre-seed investment round of $1M 𝗘𝗮𝗿𝗹𝘆 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟮: Earned our first customer – someone who found us online and paid $800 for the poor product we had at the time (I couldn’t believe it) 𝗠𝗮𝘆 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟮: Colossyan Creator publicly launched and we began commercializing 𝗙𝗲𝗯𝗿𝘂𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰: Raised a Series A investment of $22M 𝗧𝗼𝗱𝗮𝘆: Colossyan’s headcount sits at over 75, with offices in NYC, London, and Budapest The main takeaway? Failure is only failure if you don’t pick yourself back up again.

Lovely to wake up and see Angel Squad (hustlefund.vc/squad) featured in TechCrunch this morning! And not just that--to be lauded as the "YC of Angel Investing"! Brian Nichols approached our team 2.5 years ago to share a dream--to create a world-class angel investing community that would be equal parts awesome education, deals, and humans. But unlike most communities that existed at the time, he/we didn't want a community centered around exclusivity. Rather, we all wanted to align around inclusivity, to bring more voices into angel investing; not just successful techies, but also doctors, lawyers, chefs, nurses, tradespeople, and many more. Brian believed then, as he does now, that more angels from more backgrounds will only serve founders better in our ecosystem. And now here we are: 1,500+ Angel Squad members and $23M in SPV deals. 30% of Angel Squad members are women, 10% are underrepresented, and 25 countries represented. Angel Squad one of the most meaningful projects I've ever been a part of. Thank you Brian and the entire Angel Squad team for all you do to serve new angels and our founders well. Interesting conversation with Tess Hatch who says: - She doesn’t think space hardware is investable for VCs right now - She specifically calls out small rockets, comms satellites, and Earth observation as oversaturated - She *is* investing in dual-use defense software, especially AI/autonomy that incorporates sensor data from “land, sea, and space.” Selfishly, I love this and I hope it’s the predominant narrative. She’s essentially saying: I am uninterested in funding you or your competition, but I will happily fund your future customers. I know a little about what it takes to stand up a machine learning model and purpose-built software application - that was my job at Azavea before I joined Umbra. I can say very confidently that is an easier and more approachable problem than building and operating a sensor network in space. The next few years will mint massively successful (and defensible) Earth observation companies who snuck into the VC party before the door swung shut. As money pours into tools and applications downstream of the data and dries up for early-stage competition and late-stage competition who are struggling, it will flow to incumbents who control the lifeblood of the whole ecosystem (first party data).
