Is job satisfaction important? Seems like a pretty simple answer, right? 🤔 I posted the other day about how companies aren't great at posting job ads and I touched briefly on staff turnover levels. I've noticed (and this isn't ground breaking stuff) that the industry typically has very high staff turnover levels - before anyone says anything, of course some of that can be attributed to: - Fixed term contracts being very common - Project based nature of some roles e.g. only joining for a specific phase/stage (R&D function being prime example of this) - Funding/cash flow stability - Mergers/acquisitions But job satisfaction shouldn't be one of those reasons - sadly though, it is 😫 A part of this is on the person applying; do your due diligence and homework. But a big part of this is on the company. A company from the outset should be up front about who they're looking to hire. Make it clear in the job ad what their culture is and what type of environment they foster. Every job ad I write will make this clear but then in every candidate brief I double down on that to make it clear who the company are and what they're looking for. An example being perhaps that company is happy to pivot someone out of the function they're currently in after being there for 5 years to help them grow their career. Most of the time, even if the person matches 80% of the technical skills but doesn't fit what the company are looking for and equally what they're looking for, then it's pointless carrying on. So "is job satisfaction important?" - yes it is because let's reduce the staff turnover where possible and make sure that companies and candidates get what they're looking for from a company as well as just the job - avoiding the included picture for both parties!
