𝐔𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐜𝐞𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐂𝐂𝐒: 𝐈𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐏𝐞𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐚 𝐂𝐂𝐒 𝐂𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫 It was such a great pleasure to have met Ibu Faizah Ramlee, Ibu Sandy, and their team in May 2024. The meeting felt more like a discussion among old friends, even though it was our first time meeting Ibu Faizah (General Manager - Strategy, Planning & Commercial, Carbon Management). It was delightful to reconnect with Ibu Sandy after several meetings, including those in Perth and other locations. We engaged in a deep and productive discussion on the progress and goals of CCS initiatives by both the government and entities. We explored potential collaborations and exchanged questions on each country's strategies. Both of us agree that CCS is a crucial strategy for decarbonization and carbon management in our countries and for our key industry stakeholders. 𝐃𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐞 𝐀𝐩𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐬, 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐨𝐧 𝐆𝐨𝐚𝐥𝐬 While Malaysia and Indonesia have different approaches to CCS, including timelines and government agency involvement, these differences are understandable given our distinct cultures and operational mindsets. These differences do not hinder us from learning from each other and harnessing the strengths of both countries to benefit the Southeast Asian region. 𝐒𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐭𝐡𝐬 We identified key similarities between our countries: 1. 𝐒𝐮𝐛𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐟𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐒𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐂𝐚𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐢𝐭𝐲: Both Malaysia and Indonesia have significant subsurface storage capabilities. 2. 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐜 𝐋𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: Our geographic positions offer strategic advantages for CCS development. 3. 𝐑𝐢𝐜𝐡 𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐜𝐞𝐬: Both nations are endowed with abundant natural resources, providing a strong foundation for CCS initiatives. It is always a pleasant experience to meet our Malaysian counterparts at various CCS events globally. The CCS community is small, and CCS Warriors often cross paths at different events, places, and times, united by the same purpose of advancing CCS in our respective countries. The collaboration between Petronas and Indonesia CCS Center, highlights our collective commitment to advancing CCS technologies. By leveraging our shared strengths and learning from each other’s unique approaches, we can drive significant progress in our decarbonization efforts. The Estonian National Audit Office finds that as things stand, it is rather doubtful that Estonia will reach the goal that at least as much electricity as the total electricity consumed in Estonia in a year will be produced from renewable sources in Estonia by 2030. I share a different view. I believe that things are moving in the right direction and that, working together, we will achieve the desired result in time. The key to getting the parks ready on time is a technologically neutral approach, both at the coming auctions and at the connection points.
