Not that long ago, I was visiting Northumbria University campus in London. And I've got to admit I was quite impressed with the courses and partnerships offered by Northumbria University. But the question remains 🤔 Is It Worth Applying to a Non-Russell Group University 🇬🇧? Each year, thousands of students set their sights on Russell Group universities, but the competition is fierce. As we navigate this high-stakes journey with the UCAS application deadline fast-approaching, it’s crucial to have a backup plan—and to recognize the potential and opportunities offered by non-Russell Group universities. Here’s the good news! 💫 Non-Russell Group universities are not just fallback options. Many are thriving in their own right, offering exceptional learning environments, strong graduate outcomes, and innovative programs tailored to today’s job market. For instance, a recent survey by a leading newspaper highlighted universities such as Glasgow Caledonian University, Middlesex University, and the University of Dundee as institutions narrowing the gap in career success between their graduates and those from Russell Group schools. These universities excel in areas like personalised student support, diverse course offerings, and fostering practical skills through industry partnerships. They may also offer a more inclusive and supportive community, smaller class sizes, or even cutting-edge facilities in specific fields. At the end of the day, the “best” university is the one that aligns with your goals, provides the resources to help you grow, and sets you on a path to success. So, it might be a good idea to broaden perspectives and apply widely. Remember, the journey to your future is built by your determination, resilience, and how you seize the opportunities available to you, which might mean applying to places you have not initially considered 🌟 Have you considered applying to a non-Russell Group university? Share your thoughts or experiences below 👇 👩🏫 My name is Kasia and I help international students choose the best university in the UK where they can thrive academically 🇬🇧

On the 9th of January 2021, I took a significant step into a new phase of my life when I got admitted to the University of Cape Coast (UCC). This journey was marked by moments of uncertainty, challenges, growth, and ultimately, excellence. As I reflect on my time at UCC, which culminated in my graduation on the 11th of December 2024, I realize that this journey was not just about earning a degree but also about personal transformation, resilience, and the pursuit of greatness. Walking into the gates of UCC on the 9th of January 2021 was a mix of excitement and nervousness. The University of Cape Coast, renowned for its academic rigor and high standards, was an intimidating place for a fresh student like me. I questioned whether I could keep up with the demands and expectations. I still vividly remember the first day: the buzz of students hurrying to lecture halls, the sprawling campus, and the sense of purpose that filled the air. Despite my uncertainties, I resolved to embrace this opportunity wholeheartedly. The first few weeks were tough. Navigating the campus, adapting to the lecture schedules, and balancing coursework felt overwhelming. However, I soon learned that uncertainty was part of the process, and I began to find my footing. I formed study groups, sought help from lecturers, and leaned on friends for support. Slowly but surely, UCC started to feel like home. My journey at UCC was not without its challenges. There were times when the workload seemed insurmountable, when the pressure of deadlines, assignments, and exams left me feeling drained. I faced moments of self-doubt, questioning my abilities and whether I could succeed in such a competitive academic environment. One of the most defining periods of my time at UCC was during my second year when I had to juggle academics with personal struggles. The COVID-19 pandemic had already disrupted traditional learning, and the shift to online classes was a major adjustment. I had to adapt quickly to virtual platforms while ensuring I kept up with my academic responsibilities. This phase taught me the importance of discipline, time management, and staying focused amidst distractions. Despite the challenges, I found strength in perseverance. I realized that resilience was the key to success. I learned to view challenges not as roadblocks but as opportunities to grow. My lecturers, mentors, and peers played a significant role in encouraging me to push through difficult times and remain focused on my goals. As the semesters passed, I began to excel both academically and personally. My confidence grew as I actively participated in class discussions, took on leadership roles, and engaged in extracurricular activities. UCC provided me with an environment where I could discover and nurture my potential. I joined student associations, attended seminars, and took part in volunteer programs that broadened my perspective and helped me develop essential life skills. ......

Are university rankings just a 𝘃𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰? 𝗣𝗶𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀. You’re a brighteyed high school grad. You’ve got acceptance letters from two universities. One is ranked in the top 10. The other? Well, it’s somewhere in the triple digits. Your parents are nudging you towards the top 10. Society says the same. But is that top 10 ranking really all it’s cracked up to be? I’ve pondered this question a lot. 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗲’𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗜'𝘃𝗲 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗱: → Rankings often prioritise research output over teaching quality. → They can be influenced by factors like alumni donations. → Not all courses within a university are excellent; some lowerranked universities have worldclass programmes. 𝗡𝗼𝘄, 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀: What truly matters for your education and future? 𝗤𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 A passionate professor can make all the difference. 𝗢𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗽𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 Internships, labs, and realworld projects. 𝗡𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 The connections you make can open doors. 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘄𝘁𝗵 Sometimes, a smaller, less renowned institution can offer a more nurturing environment. I’ve seen too many students chase rankings and end up disillusioned. They realise their dream university wasn’t right for them. 𝗦𝗼, 𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲’𝘀 𝗺𝘆 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲: Don’t let numbers dictate your choice. Explore beyond the rankings. Visit campuses. Talk to current students. Gauge the vibe, the culture, the support system. Your university experience should be about more than just prestige. It’s about finding a place where you can grow, learn, and thrive. 4 ways to fully fund your Master’s Degree 1. Graduate Research or Teaching Assistantships: These assistantships are part-time employment opportunities offered by universities, including an hourly salary (stipend) and tuition remission. Benefits: Assistantships cover either partial or full tuition costs and provide a stipend for living expenses. They also offer valuable work experience related to your research and studies. Availability: Many universities offer these to all or most incoming master’s students, making them a more accessible funding option compared to competitive external fellowships or scholarships. 2. Applying to Programs with Full Funding Options: Research and apply to master’s programs that offer full funding packages, which typically include Assistantships. Consider programs not only at well-known universities but also at smaller and lesser-known schools, both in the U.S. and abroad. Impact: Funding options like Assistantships can significantly influence which schools you apply to and eventually attend. 3. Considering Location and Cost of Living: The stipend provided by an Assistantship may be less than a private-sector salary, but the cost of living in the area where the university is located should be taken into account. Benefit: Opting for schools in smaller cities or towns with lower living costs can make the stipend more manageable and provide a more affordable graduate experience. 4. Applying for External Fellowships or Scholarships: Although Assistantships are more accessible, applying for competitive external fellowships or scholarships is also worthwhile as they can provide additional funding. Benefit: These external awards can sometimes supplement or fully cover costs if won, offering even greater financial security during your studies. #graduateassistantship #mastersdegree #fullfunding #tuitionremission #stipend #highereducation #gradschooltips #gradassistant #researchassistantship #teachingassistantship #fundinggradschool #costofliving #gradschoolfunding #scholarships #fellowships CC: Dr.Vicki

“Doubts about the work readiness of college graduates run rampant in the U.S. Coupled with rising costs and growing college alternatives, these work readiness doubts have undoubtedly contributed to declines in both enrollments and public confidence. But with a clear evidence base behind ‘what works’ toward improving graduate work readiness, higher education institutions can and should create intentional and tangible plans to turn the confidence tide.” Here are the steps 👇🏽
