Since the early 2000s, wars on political doctrines and correctness had winded down; hence, democracy - the freedom for people to choose their elected officials- has won, taking quite substantial shapes across the globe. However, on the other hand, the world economy has come to mean that we have gotten to do whatever it takes to reduce poverty in every corner of the world.Monarchs in large parts of Europe have shown their mights and the need to exist since the end of World War II. Yes, they have less focused on politics, and rather given as much focus on the global economy; as it happens,they have won quite enormously on the world stage. As Europe has less asserted political controls, we happen to see more of an ideological shift, with political control or manipulations. In terms of Monarchy, we are talking about heredity, where political power is subjected to family ties. The United Kingdom has served as the epicenter for monarchs ' rules. As it happens to be the case, the United Kingdom has transformed quite enormously as that of North America and others of Asia as well. Hence, Europe has clearly sold itself to the world of its expanded agendas. The bottomline has been that everything has to return quite perfectly in terms of politics and the economy.

Throughout the generations powers have vied for more power and consolidated against a common enemy. John's vision sows us powers consolidating against the Lamb, but it is a doomed effort in Revelation 17: "These are united in yielding their power and authority to the beast; they will make war on the Lamb, and the Lamb will conquer them, for he is Lord of lords and King of kings, and those with him are called and chosen and faithful." The message to the church in John's day is the message to all of God's people of every generation: Jesus, not Caesar, is Lord. Jesus is King. Those with him are chosen and faithful. Don't worry. ------------------------------- Historical note: The title King of Kings, possibly originating in Persia and other counties of the region, was a designation bestowed upon or adopted by ancient despots and rulers. Thus Rome is often encoded as Babylon in the book of Revelation and generally refers to mood and methods of empire that rise and fall through history, warring with the righteous. Despite a new government at UK level, there seems to be a reluctant acceptance that the systemic challenges haven't gone away (and no magic wand is forthcoming). It feels like every second conversation I have is around finding the right approach to rapidly solving these short and longer term challenges. Most of these come down to two key problems: 1. Do you have a stress-tested understanding of what's important? Time spent getting a clear grasp of your priorities is never wasted. However some leaders seem to be reluctant to even say that they have priorities out loud. The people I speak to who are the most forward in their plans have put effort into understanding what needs their focus and what may, however painfully, need to stop. 2. What does success look like? It's easy to slip from leading to managing when the going gets tough. Keeping the whole team's attention on the overall objective is critical. For some, success is weathering this particular storm, but for others success is a broader vision of the future and the challenges of today can actually be a useful moment in getting towards real long term success. Lots of leadership teams will be spending their summers thinking about these. Some will even take the time to tackle them.

Today is the feast of St. Crispian. It's remembered today more for Shakespeare's Henry V "band of brothers" speech, in which a king inspires his numerically outnumbered army to achieve an historic victory. In the speech, Henry, a king, viewed in his time as a different and higher sort of creature than the "vile", ordinary people he was leading, promoted his entire army to be his peers: "We few, we happy few, we band of brothers; For he to-day that sheds his blood with me Shall be my brother; be he ne'er so vile, This day shall gentle his condition..." The brother of a king is a prince -- Henry in this speech is promoting his men to higher rank: "gentlemen", not serfs or peasants. Royalty even. And so he inspires them by honoring them, not holding them in the contempt that kings often had for their subjects -- nor the contempt that many managers today have for the people in their employ. This speech is a lesson for leaders on how to inspire people to excellence: not necessarily with a rousing speech, but with expressions of confidence, a vision of a better future, and permission to fail, with no mention of threats or consequences for failure. My experience has always been that an expression of confidence in the people I was mentoring or leading never hurt, and often helped, their level of achievement. Don't you find the same?
