A new architectural landmark has quietly emerged in the heart of a small suburban town in Taiwan. With a population of barely one hundred thousand and predominantly composed of the Hakka community, the Chudong Parking Structure, designed by the innovative team at Q-LAB is more than just a utilitarian facility. It is a thoughtful response to the unique socio-economic fabric of this town, where tourism and agriculture are the lifeblood of the local economy. For years, the central market has been dealing with chaotic traffic and a shortage of parking spaces, which has caused residents inconvenience. To address this issue, local authorities decided to build a parking structure to reduce congestion and promote the town's growth. 𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗠𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘂𝗹𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗦𝘂𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 Congratulations to the Central Lecture Hall building of Thuong Mai University for winning the prestigious Green GOOD DESIGN Awards. This is one of the outstanding milestones in the journey of creating green and sustainable projects, through the collaboration between Sunjin Vietnam and Edeec. The building’s design focuses on creating open spaces, with airy courtyards, rooftop gardens, and spacious corridors that optimize natural ventilation systems. The glazing facade of the building and wide balconies are thoroughly designed to enhance shading effect. Architectural features have been meticulously simulated by Edeec, combined with an optimal HVAC design strategy, helping the project achieve a new record of energy efficiency: over 50% compared to the LEED’s baseline without using solar panel systems. Research is a manifestation of one’s idealism. My colleagues, Elvina Wijaya and Budi Cahyadi Wijaya, and I believe that there is much wisdom we can gain from the past and apply, with adaptation, to the present. Rooted in the past, we aim to explore the opportunity of applying passive design in modern architecture based on the traditional houses of the Banjar people in Kalimantan. This paper focuses on three types of Banjar houses: the Bubungan Tinggi house, the Palimbangan house, and the Lanting house. We study the form and proportion of the structures and compare their passive cooling performance through CFD simulation. We are grateful that our paper has been accepted at The International Symposium and Workshop on Sustainable Buildings, Cities, and Communities (SBCC) 2024, and was recently published. Check the "Architecture Intelligence" as we explore the Morodok Techo National Stadium in Cambodia. Discover the ingenious design and construction behind this cultural fusion. The core of this building is the Sotha, inspired by the Cambodian greeting gesture—Sampeah—symbolizing cultural heritage and innovation. The design and construction team overcame numerous challenges using advanced construction techniques and innovative slipform methods. Constructors filled the molds clamped around the tower legs, and once each layer of concrete solidified, hydraulic jacks lifted the molds to the next level. Here are 5 innovative buildings from around the world that inspire us!⁠ ⁠ 1. Amager Bakke: Copenhagen. Copenhill, designed by Copenhagen-based architecture firm BIG, is a unique building that combines a waste-to-energy plant with sports facilities. The structure serves as a heat and power plant for the area and features a year-round artificial ski slope, hiking path, and climbing wall. This innovative project supports Copenhagen's goal of becoming carbon-neutral by 2025.⁠ ⁠ 2. The Parkroyal Collection Pickering, designed by Singaporean firm WOHA, is a luxury hotel in central Singapore known for its lush green facades. Dubbed a "hotel within a garden," it features 15,000 square meters of elevated terraced gardens that are self-sustaining with solar cells, rainwater collection, motion sensors, and reclaimed water. The building has won numerous awards for its innovative, sustainable architecture.⁠ ⁠ 3. The 240-meter Bahrain World Trade Center in Manama is a landmark of sustainable design. Designed by Arkins, the twin towers feature wind turbines on sky bridges, making it the first building to integrate wind technology into its structure. The turbines were developed and installed by Danish company Norwin in 2008.⁠ ⁠ 4. The Pearl River Tower in Guangzhou is a model of sustainable architecture, designed to be the most energy-efficient super-tall building in the world.
