Transforming Orchard Rd (Part 3 of 8) | In recognising that something had to be done, the Urban Redevelopment Authority of Singapore (URA) announced a master plan to transform Orchard Road and its surrounding streets. It called for the need to go beyond a retail-centric precinct to a more lifestyle destination replete with greenery. While I'm busy in healthy building projects that also have an environmental factor in Europe, cities that cool the planet, China is on the same AND another course. The 'dystopian' future is upon us. People living completely separate from nature and outdoors. This is a rather luxury building that is also a city of 20,000 people. It is the Regent International Apartment in Qianjiang. Built by Alicia Loo, also the designer of the Singapore Sands Hotel. It was built in 2013 and has an S-shape. 39 floors with restaurants, pools, supermarkets and internet cafes. It might be a solution to climate change and the heated planet if they manage to hold their electricity supply strong and their indoor climate non-toxic... PRS Co-Living Schemes: Over the next few days, I will be putting forward a few common questions (and thankfully the answers) while featuring some of our recent co-living projects. Q1: “what exactly are they?” A: a very high quality large HMO - in excellent sustainable locations and with zero parking, and including many quality communal facilities such as communal kitchen and dining, cinema room, gym, laundrette, and other break-out spaces such as to read a book or chat. How do you future proof your business, ensuring you are still relevant to your customers in the years to come? We are seeing trends in the coliving industry moving very quickly and so are customer's expectations. From state-of-the-art equipment and facilities to access to communities and activities, coliving offerings keep getting better and better, which is great to see. So how can we take this into consideration when thinking of opening a new coliving facility? What are we looking for in the building and the space we are looking to create? How do we modernise a classic building to meet the standards of today? 👷🏻♀️🛠️ Take this building in the photo for example, a century old palazzo in Sicily that has been standing empty for several years. To future proof this into a concept that will stand the test of time, we are doing extensive research into the fabric of the building and its structure. Where can we run the cables for electricity and fast WiFi? Where does the air conditioning and heating go, without compromising the beautiful decorative features? How do we design the space to accommodate private rooms as well as communal areas? The search for the right building comes with many questions but when executed well, it feels very rewarding to know you are working on something that will shape the future of coliving concepts.
