Today was a little different. Instead of my usual lunchtime walk I gave a presentation in Welsh to Merched Y Wawr community group. My presentation was around the work MetDesk does in providing forecasts to those who keep the transportation system moving, with a focus on the local area and specifics around gritting - when and why. Having the snow melt on cue for today was a handy party trick! I'll admit, I was a little outside my comfort zone - I had to change the style of presenting as it was less 'business-like' than perhaps I would normally do. I'd also managed to translate my slides without using Google, which I was pleased about. Although Welsh is my first language, I don't use it daily beyond the home, so terms like 'Climatic Domains' take a little extra thought to translate. Social Value/Community Benefits now form an increasing part of most publicly tendered contracts we come across. It's often a challenge to find activities where you can deliver tangible social value, especially when you're not involved in delivering infrastructure or construction projects. Engaging with community groups in your home area is a quick win. It takes a little effort and time but is very rewarding and you'd be surprised at the level of interest in what you and your organisations do - I can thoroughly recommend! 💬 “I now have green energy in my home and lower fuel bills.” Watch 📽 Hertfordshire Council resident Libby talks about her experience with sustainable upgrades introduced to her home thanks to the government’s Home Upgrade Grant. In this short video produced by the council, Libby answers key questions about the scheme like: ❔ What made you look for support with your energy? ❔ Did you have any reservations about the work? ❔ Are you pleased with the work now it is finished? ❔ Is there anything you would change or improve? ❔ If you had to describe your experience in three words, what would they be? ❔ Would you recommend the scheme to other households? In the video, Libby said: “I’d recommend it to anyone because it’s made a huge difference to my home.” Watch the video to hear more about Libby’s experience with the HUG2 scheme: https://lnkd.in/eCAEy84D #HUG #HomeUpgradeGrant #Salix #WarmerHomes #SupportingResidents #LowerEnergyBills

The AFR column on the Bruce Highway Funding again demonstrates how biased they are and fast losing credibility or more appropriately following the Australian, both are fast becoming irrelevant. The phrase "if you do it, you are damned; if you don't do it, you are damned" captures a sense of hopelessness that can often accompany bureaucratic decisions or inaction, especially when lives are at stake. The reference to the Australian context suggests see parallels in how this issue is being handled, possibly implying that there is a lack of responsiveness or urgency in addressing public safety. When fatalities on a highway reach unacceptable levels, it's not just a statistic; it's a reflection of real lives lost and families affected. This situation calls for immediate and effective measures to enhance safety and prevent further tragedies. The LNP (Liberal National Party) did nothing for a decade, which points to a broader concern about political accountability and the need for effective governance. It's disheartening when it feels like essential infrastructure improvements or safety measures are overlooked, especially when the data on accidents and fatalities is clear.

Those are key points Brendan. Housing and services are basic needs for people living, raising families and working in local areas, wherever 'local' is. Government policy should serve to protect everyone's capacity to meet their basic needs, that is the 'social threshold' of Doughnut Economics. When the capacity of some to meet their desire for a holiday home diminishes the capacity of others to meet their basic needs, Government policy is failing and has a duty to correct the inequality evidenced in your contribution. Recently, I contributed to a short discussion on RTE Radio 1 Countrywide about housing in the countryside. While there has been much focus on planning permission, it is important to take account of the wider local context for homes and households, including local service provision. Would-be rural dwellers, especially rural youth, are often displaced by those investing in second- / holiday-homes and short-term lets. House inflation is a significant problem in many rural areas, many of which have lower median incomes than metropolitan zones. Other contributors to this programme, presented by Hannah Quinn-Mulligan, were Aisling O'Brien, Margaret Donnelly, Eoin O'Brien and Derek Whyte https://lnkd.in/eXrGnwMp
