The mystique of ears! As an ENT physician, I use Tympanometry daily to rule in/out middle ear fluid or presence/absence of tympanic membrane perforation because.... Ears are hard - even for an ENT. Ears are often misdiagnosed in the Urgent Care/ER setting because...ears are hard. Tympanometry is a simple tool (with billable CPT code) to greatly increase your ear diagnostics - and become a better steward of antibiotic use. This tool should be in every ER/Urgent Care/Primary care clinic. DM me for details of implementing this in your clinic. 5 simple steps to discuss Advance Directives in a doctors appointment? Last weekend I spoke at the Maryland Academy of Family Physicians’ annual conference teaching my fellow primary care physicians how to broach the subject of Advance Directives in the office with patients. Time is always a challenge in a primary care visit, but I provided some tips on how to have a brief, but still effective, conversation with patients. 1. Use the initial time to *introduce* the topic of advance directives. Define an advance directive as two simple parts: naming your medical decision maker + documenting medical preferences 2. Present patients with a blank copy of the Maryland (or your state) advance directive and *briefly* walk them through the form. Big thick forms are scary and just a simple introduction makes them much less intimidating! 3. Tell your patients to go home, read through the document, use a pencil to mark things up 4. Return for a dedicated appointment to review and answer any questions. 5. Reassure, reassure, reassure! You are there to help and they can update their documents at any time! #advancecareplanning #advancedirective #endoflifeplanning #endoflifecare #physician #mdafp

Great tips for primary care providers! Don't forget to bill for your time on advance care planning if you spend a minimum of 16 minutes on this important conversation (it can be done, either at a subsequent visit or as part of an annual wellness visit). #primarycare #careplanning #advancecareplanning #patientcenteredcare

The Unexpected Joys of Medical Practice In healthcare, we often encounter situations that challenge both our knowledge and intuition. I recently shared a personal experience on Medium that taught me a profound lesson about the balance between clinical expertise and human empathy. A mother of four came to me with abdominal complaints, and during the examination, I felt something surprising—a baby. Despite her certainty that she wasn’t pregnant, I gently suggested she get an echography. Months later, she returned with a beautiful baby in her arms, reminding me of the unpredictable and joyful nature of our work. This experience underscored the importance of patience, trust, and humility in healthcare. It’s a powerful reminder that sometimes our most significant role isn’t just to diagnose or treat, but to listen, support, and let the truth reveal itself over time. 💡 Key Takeaways: Communication is vital, especially when patients are skeptical or unsure.Trust between doctor and patient can lead to unexpected and rewarding outcomes. Empathy and patience are as crucial as medical knowledge in our practice. I invite you to read the full story on Medium, where I reflect on this and other experiences that have shaped my approach to medicine. Let’s continue to embrace the surprises and joys that come with this incredible journey. 🌟 #Healthcare #MedicalPractice #DoctorPatientRelationship #EmpathyInMedicine #TrustInHealthcare #PatientCare #MedicalStories #LifeAsADoctor #HealthcareProfessionals #MediumArticle #MedicalExperience #MedicalEducation #HumanSideOfMedicine https://lnkd.in/dbh-gVzK

Medical School teaches you medicine but there are many aspects of practicing medicine you dont learn in school. For Dr. Aparna Shah, one thing she wish she would have known is how much of the general public you would be dealing with. #Communication is extremely important for all physicians especially #ophthalmologists and #optometrists. Effective communication helps in building trust between the #patient and #physician. Patients are more likely to feel comfortable, share relevant medical history, and follow treatment plans when they trust their doctor. Good communication skills are also important for interacting with colleagues, staff, and other healthcare professionals. This ensures smooth coordination and collaboration in patient care. We all have our days and #healthcare can be extremly stressful but keep in mind mind communication is an art and can have a major affect on the overall patient experience. Are there other things you wish you would have learned in #medicalschool? Give our friends over at Ophthalpreneurs a follow to learn more!
