As an airport ramp controller, I occasionally get questions about what the career is like. The main topic always brought up is the similar responsibilities of air traffic control: maintaining safe, orderly and expeditious flow while also issuing traffic calls and safety alerts. The only difference being that it is provided within the nonmovement area and is the responsibility of either the airline, a contractor or even the airport itself. But did you know that ramp towers can also provide airports with other important services? At many airports around the country, ramp control facilities can also provide additional services to assist in running airline and airport operations efficiently. The accident highlighted the need for stricter adherence to pilot qualification requirements and emphasized the importance of effective decision-making skills honed through comprehensive training. Last Thursday, a dangerous incident occurred at São Paulo's Congonhas Airport: a plane's takeoff narrowly cleared the runway by just a few inches. This close call could have resulted in a disaster, especially given the airport's location in the heart of the city. This incident has prompted me to reflect on airport design and safety. Although the root cause of this event is still under investigation, it's well-known that Congonhas Airport has a relatively short runway of 6,000 feet compared to Los Angeles International Airport's 9,000 feet or Heathrow's 12,000 feet. Moreover, a 2022 Safety Assessment of Congonhas Airport revealed significant issues with the operating company's coordination, training, and processes. These deficiencies increase the risk of errors during routine operations, potentially leading to accidents. As urban airports like Congonhas continue to operate amidst densely populated areas, it is imperative to prioritize safety and coordination to prevent potential disasters. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing need for vigilance and improvement in aviation safety standards. Critical safety overhaul at Japan’s airports - https://lnkd.in/gZztDkeW TOKYO, Jan 09 (News On Japan) - After the recent collision between a Japan Airlines plane and a Japan Coast Guard aircraft at Haneda Airport, Japan's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) has announced urgent safety measures nationwide. The incident is believed to have occurred because the Japan Coast Guard aircraft misunderstood the air traffic controller's use of "number one" as indicating takeoff clearance instead of the departure order. As an immediate response, MLIT has temporarily stopped announcing departure orders in advance, opting to give direct takeoff clearances instead. It is believed that the Coast Guard aircraft mistakenly entered the runway, with neither the air traffic controller nor the Japan Airlines plane aware of the incursion. In response, MLIT has compiled urgent safety measures, including refraining from communicating the departure order in advance, instead issuing takeoff clearances directly. Airlines have also been instructed to ensure thorough monitoring from the cockpit during takeoff and landing, to reiterate to pilots the control instructions related to runway entry, and to change the color of the stop lines before the runways at airports such as Haneda, Narita, Osaka, and Kansai to more conspicuous hues. MLIT has already established a new role at Haneda's control operations to constantly monitor screens that confirm the positions of aircraft. The Japan Coast Guard has been instructed to hold safety meetings and inspect operational manuals as part of emergency safety measures. The aftermath resulted in the loss of lives, significant damage, and the suspension of airport operations during a peak travel period. The Japan Transport Safety Board initiated a formal investigation into the incident, involving cooperation from international agencies, including the French Bureau of Enquiry and Analysis for Civil Aviation Safety, Rolls-Royce, Pratt & Whitney Canada, and the National Transportation Safety Board. Preliminary findings revealed communication lapses and runway incursion issues, emphasizing the need for enhanced safety measures. The collision highlighted the importance of fostering a robust safety culture within the aviation industry. Japan Airlines (JAL) expressed its commitment to cooperate fully with the investigation, offering condolences and support to those affected.
