Search Labs | AI Overview While non-technical managers can set deadlines for technical work, it's generally not recommended to fully trust them to set "reasonable" deadlines without consulting with technical team members due to their lack of in-depth understanding of the technical complexities involved, which could lead to unrealistic or rushed timelines that negatively impact quality and team morale; open communication and collaboration between managers and technical staff is crucial to set achievable deadlines. Key points to consider: Lack of technical expertise: Non-technical managers might not fully grasp the time required for specific technical tasks, leading to potentially unrealistic deadlines. Importance of consultation: To set appropriate deadlines, non-technical managers should actively involve technical team members in the planning process, seeking their input on task complexity and time estimations. Potential for stress and burnout: Unrealistic deadlines set by non-technical managers can lead to increased pressure on the team, potentially causing burnout. However, in some situations, non-technical managers can still be effective in setting deadlines: Clear project scope: If the project scope is well-defined and understood by both the manager and technical team, setting deadlines can be more manageable, even without deep technical knowledge. Strong communication: When managers actively communicate with the team, listen to feedback, and are open to adjustments based on technical challenges, they can still effectively manage deadlines. "AI is stealing our jobs" Having recently started an AI company, I've been thinking a lot about the perceived dangers and dark side of the technology. As a writer, people have been telling me for years that AI would put me out of a job but, if anything, it has made my work better. This (oldie but goodie) article from WIRED hits the nail on the head when it comes to AI and the future of work: "By breaking down your job into tasks that AI can fully take on, tasks for which AI can improve your efficiency, and tasks that require your unique skills, you can identify the skills you should actually be investing in to stay competitive in the job you have." AI definitely will 'steal' parts of your job but in doing so, it should give you the freedom to lean in to the most human parts of your work; creativity, collaboration and leadership, for example. How has AI changed the way you work? Which tools have helped you most?
