Grant Wiggins and Jay McTighe first explored Backward Design in 1998 through their mutually published Understanding by Design. Backward Design was given new life in 2011 with their Expanded 2nd Edition. In the academic field, there are government-provided standards, corporation/institutional goals and standards, and department goals which make the process of Backward Design relatively "easy": 1) Identify the desired result for learners (the academic standards). 2) Determine how to collect evidence that learners gained understanding (project rubrics or assessments). -Bonus Step: Identify the level of understanding through Bloom's Taxonomy. 3) Plan curriculum that will lead to the identified desired result (lecture, labs, groupwork, reading, etc.). But in the manufacturing or corporate world, standards are harder to identify. So, often times, #LearningAndDevelopment departments spend a lot of their early efforts on hunting for the #LearningLibrary which has the most optimal bank of courses. Hoping the company might need them at some point in the future. Training for the sake of training. Why Study a Degree Course and Fail to Practice It? After completing school, I noticed a striking trend: many graduates do not end up working in the field they studied. Latecomers were marked absent, and poor timekeeping could result in lower grades. This discipline reflects real-world job expectations, where meeting deadlines and punctuality are crucial. Without this rigorous training, I might have struggled with managing my time effectively. 3) Problem-Solving Skills My final year project required me to brainstorm and refine numerous ideas. I chose to focus on e-mobility infrastructure, addressing current environmental concerns. This project honed my ability to identify gaps and devise practical solutions—an invaluable skill in any profession. 4) Communication and Presentation Skills Frequent presentations during my studies improved my ability to convey ideas clearly and confidently. These skills are essential for success in any field, enabling effective collaboration and persuasive communication. While many graduates do not work in the field they studied, the skills they acquire during their education—resilience, time management, problem-solving, and communication—are highly transferable and valuable in various careers. This adaptability ensures that their education is far from wasted.

Every job seeker can relate to Stephanie’s poignant career story and be inspired by her perseverance. “I am more than my resume!” is the resounding chorus echoing across LinkedIn posts from people out of work. The volume of reposted jobs demonstrates that the process and criteria by which applicants are commonly vetted are not working. The time, money, and resources spent on hiring show little ROI. It’s time to try something new, a human-centered approach. Hiring the first two designers for my team took more than five months. The company’s recruiting and interview process preceded my arrival. Frustrated with the ineffectiveness of it all, I took it upon myself to schedule 15-minute calls with candidates I identified as having potential. I cared very little about the credentials in their resume; their work samples and my short call with a candidate were the most effective indicators of ability and fit. The two people we hired due to my method are exceptional; one is experienced but early in their career, and the other is a recent graduate with no job experience. If I had conformed to hiring based predominately on resumes, neither would have been scheduled for interviews. We all know trying the same thing repeatedly is futile, expecting different results. Try something new!

🎓 I talked myself into a Master’s program…without a bachelor’s degree. I’m a curious person. I love learning. I also love doing. The first college I attended didn’t end up being the right fit, so I took a semester off to figure out my next move. I travelled and worked a bit, then applied to Parsons School of Design - The New School Graduating with a bachelor’s degree would have required an additional year of study. I was chomping at the bit to start applying what I was learning in a job I was offered while in school…yeah, the job market was a little kinder back then, so I wrapped up my undergraduate education at Parsons with an associate degree. This came back to bite me in the a**. 🐊 When I went to apply to Interior Design programs years later, my number one pick was a master’s level program. A bachelor’s degree was the pre-requisite. I applied anyway. And got rejected. I sent a letter appealing my rejection. I got rejected again. I sent an email to the head of admissions. Yup- rejected. 💡I requested a meeting with the head of admissions. During the meeting I laid out my case. This was the program that would make me the most successful. What they were offering – student body diversity, class offerings, caliber of instructor- made this the best fit for me, and as a result, she would find me to be an engaged member of the program and the community. I also said that I would continue to request an audience with her until I was admitted. 😏 I got in. 🎉 I was successful in that program, led internal clubs, and engaged deeply with the instructors and fellow students. I started a business during my time there. I have taken the #designthinking I learned into every role I’ve had since whether it was related to Interior Design or not. Here are my two takeaways. 👇 #Hiringmanagers and #recruiters – don’t solely rely on level of education as an indicator of future success. Bet on the person, not the degree. Everyone – rejection is an invitation to get creative. Find your way in.

Design studios, you need to hire with more impact this year! Stop posting job ads into the void and sifting through application white noise. I get it; the year has just started and You have no time to focus on hiring You barely have time to manage your projects and you're short on staff! The last few months, I spoke to a dozen practice owners. They've thrown money at all kinds of talent 'solutions' - Expensive recruiters with poor ROI - Job boards with nothing but spam - Social media posts that reach no one Now, I'm not saying these are wrong by default.
