These goals should be SMART: specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound. They should also be communicated and agreed upon by all team members, so that everyone knows what they are working towards and why. Having clear and aligned goals helps you track your team's progress, identify gaps and challenges, and celebrate achievements. Team roles and responsibilities The second step to measure and improve your team's performance and productivity is to assign and clarify roles and responsibilities for each team member. This helps avoid confusion, duplication, or overlap of tasks, and ensures that everyone knows what they are expected to do and how they contribute to the team's success. Roles and responsibilities should be based on each team member's skills, strengths, and interests, and should be flexible and adaptable to changing needs and situations. Team communication and collaboration The third step to measure and improve your team's performance and productivity is to foster effective communication and collaboration among team members. This means creating a culture of trust, respect, and openness, where team members can share ideas, opinions, and feedback, and listen to each other's perspectives and inputs. THE “I” IN “TEAM”: HOW DESIGNERS CAN ACTIVATE TEAM SUCCESS THROUGH PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT In the realm of teamwork, the phrase "There's no 'I' in 'TEAM'" is often touted as a reminder of the collective effort needed to achieve success. While collaboration and synergy are undoubtedly crucial, it's essential to recognize the significance of individual growth and development in driving team performance to new heights. As designers, it's easy to fall into the trap of relying solely on the strengths of others within the team. However, by embracing the 'I' in 'TEAM' and investing in our own self-development, we can become catalysts for positive change and elevate the overall effectiveness of the team. 1. Embrace Personal Growth: Personal growth is a continuous journey of learning, improvement, and self-discovery. It involves honing our skills, expanding our knowledge, and cultivating valuable traits such as creativity, adaptability, and resilience. By actively seeking opportunities for growth, whether through workshops, online courses, or mentorship programs, designers can enhance their capabilities and bring fresh perspectives to the table. 2. Becoming a Source of Inspiration: When team members prioritize their personal growth, they not only improve their individual skill sets but also inspire others to do the same. By demonstrating a commitment to self-improvement, designers become role models within the team, motivating their peers to strive for excellence and pursue their own development goals. 🚀 "Your plan relies on others accurately planning their work." The success of our feature releases heavily relies on how accurately the team can plan their work. While I don’t dictate how long tasks should take, the timelines we set are based on the team’s own estimates. If the planning isn’t accurate, it will seriously impact the team and me later on, as I’m ultimately responsible for both the deliverables and the timeline as an EM. To improve our planning process, I focus on several key practices: 🔹 Estimate tasks before starting. 🔹 Conduct spikes for tasks you haven’t tackled before. 🔹 Break down large tasks if you’re unfamiliar with the work. 🔹 Pair with experts for guidance on new topics before estimating. 🔹 Leave buffer time for unexpected issues in each sprint. Effective planning is a skill that requires repetition and commitment, but the results are well worth it.
