🧐 Co-Founder & Architect @ CO-architecture | Building the fastest growing network for architecture & design
Design studios, you need to hire with more impact this year! Stop posting job ads into the void and sifting through application white noise. I get it; the year has just started and You have no time to focus on hiring You barely have time to manage your projects and you're short on staff! The last few months, I spoke to a dozen practice owners. They've thrown money at all kinds of talent 'solutions' - Expensive recruiters with poor ROI - Job boards with nothing but spam - Social media posts that reach no one Now, I'm not saying these are wrong by default. But a better solution might be closer than you think. In an ideal world, as a practice owner, you aim to hire by: Networking, mentoring, and training talent to meet the demand. But this all requires time, which we both know you don't have. What would you say if we could do it for you? and what if we could do it with a positive social impact for the industry? We're on the look out for employers in architecture, interior design and planning who are keen to change things up in 2024 DM me if you want to know more about CO-academy - Australia's ultimate digital campus for early-career design rockstars! 🎓 I talked myself into a Master’s program…without a bachelor’s degree. I’m a curious person. I love learning. I also love doing. The first college I attended didn’t end up being the right fit, so I took a semester off to figure out my next move. I travelled and worked a bit, then applied to Parsons School of Design - The New School Graduating with a bachelor’s degree would have required an additional year of study. I was chomping at the bit to start applying what I was learning in a job I was offered while in school…yeah, the job market was a little kinder back then, so I wrapped up my undergraduate education at Parsons with an associate degree. This came back to bite me in the a**. 🐊 When I went to apply to Interior Design programs years later, my number one pick was a master’s level program. A bachelor’s degree was the pre-requisite. I applied anyway. And got rejected. I sent a letter appealing my rejection. I got rejected again. I sent an email to the head of admissions. Yup- rejected. 💡I requested a meeting with the head of admissions. During the meeting I laid out my case. This was the program that would make me the most successful. What they were offering – student body diversity, class offerings, caliber of instructor- made this the best fit for me, and as a result, she would find me to be an engaged member of the program and the community. I also said that I would continue to request an audience with her until I was admitted. 😏 I got in. 🎉 I was successful in that program, led internal clubs, and engaged deeply with the instructors and fellow students. I started a business during my time there. I have taken the #designthinking I learned into every role I’ve had since whether it was related to Interior Design or not. Here are my two takeaways. 👇 #Hiringmanagers and #recruiters – don’t solely rely on level of education as an indicator of future success. Bet on the person, not the degree. Everyone – rejection is an invitation to get creative. Find your way in.

The career & leadership coach for working parents with young children | Founder of careers&crayons | Helping parents to thrive not stagnate | Ex-global mgt consultant | Toddler Mum (help) | Proud LGBTQ+
I haven't used my university degree. I graduated in 2010 with a degree (architecture) in an industry (construction) that was still in recovery from the 2008 crash. Bad timing is an understatement. But perseverance is my middle name so, I went out and got a job at an architecture firm that looked promising. And I struggled. A lot -> I found out I have dyscalculia (𝘕𝘶𝘮𝘣𝘦𝘳𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘮𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘶𝘳𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘴 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘵𝘵𝘺 𝘪𝘮𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘵) -> I realised that I am a big-picture person (𝘎𝘳𝘢𝘥𝘶𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘴 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘴𝘵𝘶𝘤𝘬 𝘥𝘰𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘺𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘥𝘦𝘵𝘢𝘪𝘭𝘦𝘥 𝘥𝘳𝘢𝘸𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘴 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘪𝘮𝘢𝘨𝘪𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘶𝘱 𝘣𝘶𝘪𝘭𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘴𝘱𝘢𝘤𝘦𝘴 𝘭𝘪𝘬𝘦 𝘰𝘯 𝘎𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘋𝘦𝘴𝘪𝘨𝘯𝘴) -> I wasn't inspired by the career path ahead of me (𝘠𝘰𝘶 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘨𝘰𝘵 𝘵𝘰 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘸𝘢𝘯𝘵 𝘪𝘵 𝘵𝘰 𝘣𝘦 𝘪𝘯 𝘪𝘵 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘭𝘰𝘯𝘨 𝘩𝘢𝘶𝘭) So I left architecture as a career, kept it as a hobby and went back to where I had started at 18: Retail Management. It would have been easy to see those four years as a waste. -> 30k+ in debt -> Blood, sweat, tears and effort down the drain -> I didn't get the outcome that I intended And if you were to take a look at my "squiggly career" since, it looks like I have made a fair few "wasteful" decisions over the decades as well. I see this narrative with my clients all the time. Maybe you have made a career decision and: -> The promotion didn't happen -> You don't feel motivated or inspired -> You haven't achieved what you wanted to It's easy to think that the decision was wrong And you have "wasted" time and money Whether it is a period of 6 months or 6 years Here's the thing 𝗡𝗼 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝘄𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲 𝗶𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴. Especially if that learning is about you Your strengths, values and what motivates you. Take those learnings to influence what's next. It's growth in action. #thedecisioncoach

Around this time of year I get drafted into different universities. One of the observations over the years is that businesses hire for attitude over skill - and in the backdrop of a poor jobs economy, I think that only heightens. Always use the example of Mumtaz Karim who went to our Design Truth event as a third-year student up in Manchester, dragging other students to come along. You knew that day she would have a career in design, and you didn't need to see the work to know that. This idea of how can you take the opportunity in front of you right now - the graduates & students that turn up (sometimes by themselves) to Design Truth events often end up in work, and it highlights the attitude, passion & hunger of trying to make it work rather than waiting for it to come to you. We put all this energy into a portfolio but a lot of the time it is all about character. A timely reminder that in our world, it can get harder to find work - ask any lead level ID'er. Deck below (appreciate it makes zero sense without a recording) - but if you are in Loughborough on Thursday then do say hello. _ #industrialdesign #designtruth

Hello LinkedIn Family,It’s been a while since my last update here, and what a journey it has been! A few months back, I shared with you my decision to take a step back from the architectural realm—a decision that felt absolutely right. Well! ...about half a year on, I find myself irresistibly drawn back to the world of architecture. Just moments ago, I caught myself on the verge of submitting an application for an architectural position. It seems the universe has a sense of humor, given my recent attempts at bidding adieu to this profession. Withdrawal symptoms, anyone? 😅 (*Inserts subtle tears*) This unexpected pull has led me to a profound realization: architecture is not just a career; it's a calling. Despite the challenges and the not-so-glamorous aspects of being notoriously underpaid, the passion for architecture never truly fades. The rigorous training and apprenticeship we undergo as architects serve not merely as education but as a form of indoctrination—welcoming us into a unique fraternity of visionaries and creators... of gods! ...So here I am, rediscovering my passion for architecture, embracing the undeniable fact that once an architect, always an architect. It's a testament to the idea that our true callings have a way of finding us, no matter how far we wander. To all my fellow architects and creators on this platform, let's continue to inspire and be inspired. The world needs our visions now more than ever!! #Architecture #CareerJourney #PassionRediscovered #ArchitectLife #career #growth
