Do you trust each member of your "leadership team" with the Jesus Nut of your business? In helicopters, the "Jesus Nut" holds the main rotor to the rotor mast. If the Jesus Nut fails, the rotor detaches. As you fall from the sky, calling on Jesus might be one of the few available options. In business, the Jesus Nut is the weekly tactical meetings you hold with your "leadership team," and they hold with their teams. Everything revolves around the assumption that at your weekly tactical, problems with numbers and priorities are getting solved. There are only 13 weeks in a quarter to meet your profit goals. There are only 13 weeks in a quarter to finish each of your Quarterly Rocks, so you can: 1. Achieve your 1-Year Growth Plan 2. Achieve your 3-Year Growth Plan 3. Reach your Pinnacle (aka BHAG, aka 10-Year Target) You've got to make progress each week, or the whole thing can fall apart. "No action, activity, or process is more central to a healthy organization than the meeting. "As dreaded as the 'm' word is, as maligned as it has become, there is no better way to have a fundamental impact on an organization than by changing the way it does meetings," Patrick Lencioni wrote in 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘈𝘥𝘷𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘢𝘨𝘦. In the Pinnacle, Scaling Up, and EOS business operating systems, each member of the "leadership team" must ACE collaborative problem-solving. ACE means ... - Aptitude - Capability - Enthusiasm ... for solving problems standing in the way this week of hitting our numbers and completing our Rocks. "Leaders" who don't demonstrate that enthusiasm? They're trying to distract your attention from their own poor performance, that of their team, or both. If they're doing that in their weekly tactical meeting with you, imagine what they're doing when you're not looking—during the weekly tactical meeting they "lead" with their team. Do you trust each member of your "leadership team" with the Jesus Nut of your business? The slightest hesitation means you need to take action now. Strategic plans are complex to execute — failure occurs between 60% and 90% of cases. Many factors can impact the success of your business strategy. The top five reasons business strategies fail include the following: 1. Premature upscaling:  Pushing your business past its current limits could cause business failure, as not anticipating possible consequences could leave your business beyond the scope it can handle. 2. Choice of employees and partners:  For a strategic plan to be successful, you must choose the best people for each role. The wrong people and priorities will decrease productivity and cohesiveness. 3. Gaps in planning:  To create and implement a successful business strategy, you must plan for it. Without adequate communication and proper leadership, your business could experience delays in planning implementation. In the absence of actionable daily plans, people will lose their focus and prioritize less critical tasks. 4. Lack of leadership:  Ineffective leadership could mean the downfall of a strategic plan. Leadership is responsible for communications and goal management — without these, your business will be like a ship without a rudder. 5. Unrealistic goals:  Unattainable goals could set your business up for failure before it’s even off the ground. Employee satisfaction will dip as they can’t meet your requirements. There are two business fundamentals that have never changed. The good news is that every business leader is in control of them... Building a successful business involves hard work, which is why I don't believe in the get-rich-quick schemes that are constantly circulating on the internet. I've worked with some of the best leaders in business. I've witnessed and been part of high-performing teams that have led transformational business change. I've worked with mentors who have provided me with a level of help and support that I cannot articulate how much I appreciate. Today is no different. In this blog post, I am going to make the case for two of the business fundamentals that have never changed, which many of the get-rich-quick business tactics I've read recently seem to overlook. I am talking about people and purpose.     People. If you're a business leader, lead by example. Your people look to you. So, the standards you set matter. High-performing teams aren't built by accident; key factors determine the quality of a business's people. It starts with, at every opportunity, hiring people better than you. I firmly believe leaders need to get comfortable with this. Then, we need to get out of their way and focus on what will ultimately keep our teams in the organisation, namely the company's culture. Yes, other things affect the quality of people in an organisation and retaining them, but hiring great people and creating an environment where they can flourish is a good start.   Purpose. "Your vibe attracts your tribe." Your 'vibe' is your purpose, and your 'tribe', your colleagues, customers, partners, shareholders, etc., which most businesses need some or all of. An aligned tribe is a cornerstone to success. It also drives decision-making. Purpose drives strategy: A former CEO of mine regularly asked my colleagues and me, "What's our philosophical position on this?" This was his way of asking, "Does this decision align with our business purpose?" If it fitted, we acted; if it didn't, we moved on. The clarity this provided us in the critical decision-making process was invaluable. Lead by example. Build a team of extraordinary people, create a company culture that supports their and the company's growth and define a purpose that underpins your decisions. In short, people + purpose = profit.
