How do you find a career that you enjoy? The first step is💡reflecting about yourself. This is how the Individual Career Development Plan (IDP) takes you on your career journey! Reflecting on yourself first makes the career transition🔓easier: job selection, writing CV and Cover Letters, giving Job Interviews. Therefore, we start the Individual Career Development Plan (IDP) Workbook in Chapter 1 with structured self-reflection exercises. 🚩Are you ready for a first exercise? 🚩Stay tuned, we will follow-up this Wednesday with another post! Are you Career Ready? Let's dive into the essential skill of critical thinking. Employers highly value a range of career-ready skills in applicants, and critical thinking stands out as one of the most essential. Critical thinking is defined as the objective analysis and evaluation of an issue to form a judgment. This skill is invaluable in the workplace, allowing individuals to break down ideas, compare differing viewpoints, and evaluate the merits of various concepts. Key traits of critical thinkers include questioning ideas and assumptions, relying on reason over emotion, imagining diverse solutions, and welcoming all points of view. Critical thinkers strive to be well-informed, think independently, and make fact-based decisions. To enhance critical thinking skills, one should: 1. **Read more**: This broadens the knowledge base and introduces new perspectives. 2. **Play brain games**: These stimulate clear and creative thinking. 3. **Embrace challenges**: Regularly solving problems improves critical thinking abilities. 4. **Make time for reflection**: Taking time to reflect can aid in deeper thinking. Critical thinking is essential in any career, enabling individuals to thoroughly understand and solve complex problems. By delving deeper into issues and questioning assumptions, anyone can develop into a proficient critical thinker. Higher Ed @Wix | Ex-Amazon | I help students see their skills as personal brands to attract employers
Nothing beats the euphoria of landing your dream job. • Greater job satisfaction • Feeling truly valued • Increased earning potential Here are 3 realizations from my journey from classroom to corporate: 1. Your skills are more valuable than you think. • I realized my teaching skills like communication and leadership could open doors in new industries. • Identifying, valuing, and feeling confident in these skills was the first step. 2. Showcasing your skills effectively is crucial. And if you want to go deeper, try this: • Update your resume with specific examples of your skills in action. • Contribute to LinkedIn articles to earn badges and increase visibility. • Build a portfolio website that highlights your achievements and projects. 3. Continuous learning boosts your career currency. Aside from taking courses, stay ahead by: • Networking relentlessly. • Seeking feedback from mentors. • Repeat 1 & 2. Work on making your skills so good you can't be ignored. The book that completely changed my life: (And helped me harness my potential & achieve my career goals.) 👇 Mastery by Robert Greene

“I was expecting the interview to ask me very technical questions but instead they asked me a lot of business oriented problem solving questions.” “Like what?” I asked. “Like, you have these resources and are trying to solve this problem, what would you do first? Or, they would tell me about a specific business problem they currently have, like a product they’ve been working on for a certain segment of the market, and they asked me a bunch of questions about it. I wasn’t ready for this at all.” This was a conversation I had with a PhD recently. Too many PhDs, especially those coming out of academia, assume that it’s their technical skills that will get them hired. Instead, you’ll mainly be tested on your critical thinking skills. One of the best ways to demonstrate critical thinking is by the questions you ask. This shows you're not just a passive participant in the interview but are actively engaging with the information presented to you. Ask questions that reveal a deeper understanding of the company's challenges, market position, and strategic goals. Next, use scenario-based responses to their questions. When discussing your experiences, frame them in a way that highlights your critical thinking process. Use examples where you had to analyze complex data, weigh different perspectives, or solve problems creatively. Discuss how you identified key issues, evaluated options, and arrived at a solution, emphasizing your analytical and evaluative skills. Third, demonstrate your learning process. Show that your critical thinking skills are underpinned by a commitment to continuous learning. Discuss how you stay informed about your field. Highlight how this ongoing learning has helped you develop a well-rounded perspective and informed decision-making process. Do you think your technical skills or your critical thinking skills are more important to getting hired? Tell me in a comment below. Share this post to help inspire another job seeker. - Isaiah #jobsearch #jobtips #careercoach #phd #phdlife #postdoc #phdstudent #cheekyscientist

Increase your impact, grow your contribution, improve your organization. Empowerment Facilitator, Consultant, Speaker & Author. PhD in Chemical Engineering
Personal Brand and Reputation As a young professional, I channeled my ambition into my work performance with the naïve belief that my performance would speak for itself. Luckily, I had a sponsor who spoke up for me when an executive thought I was too immature for a management position. The sponsor asked a colleague to mentor me about professional image. As a result, I did receive a promotion to management because your image can influence your reputation. Your personal brand is how you choose to represent yourself while your reputation is how others actually perceive and interpret you based on their experiences and interactions. Both are important and can significantly influence your success and relationships. For example, your personal brand can influence how you are approached in professional settings which, in turn, influences networking and opportunities. Your reputation can impact your trustworthiness which is a key component in the quality of professional relationships which, in turn, influences collaboration and performance. Your personal brand can influence your reputation in negative or positive ways. You will perform a personal brand exercise as part of AIChE’s Career Discovery® for Students program. Sign up for Introduction to Career Discovery for Students offered on October 27th, 2024 in San Diego California when you register for the AIChE annual student conference: https://lnkd.in/exRGgEHV. #careerdevelopment #careerdiscovery #personaldevelopment #studentdevelopment #jobsearching #interviewing
