Plenty of people follow their company's rules, hoping that if they follow the rules well enough, that they will move up the ladder. But do they even like where that ladder takes them? Tech Recruiting @ Nike | Recruiting Community Founder | Data & AI/ML | I like to speak at events sometimes
"Hard skills can open doors for you, soft skills help you succeed once you're inside" This is a quote I came across this week and it's one of the most real things I've read recently💯 When I started my career in Recruiting, one of my ex-managers told me that me being the top-performing recruiter with the highest numbers is not enough to be successful. He said before I become the top performing recruiter, I need to be a better communicator, presenter, listener, resilient and have high emotional intelligence, that's what I needed to succeed, and each day I get reminded of how right he was. Technical skills are great, being able to perform the tasks of your role and master your craft is crucial for you to forge expertise in a field, but without soft skills, you'll never go far in a career. If you're unable to listen to people effectively, if you're unable to communicate the right way, don't have empathy and if you lack self-awareness then it'll be extremely difficult for you to grow in a career. Whenever I seek feedback I always ask about the soft part first. Did I communicate properly? Did I listen well? Did I show confidence? It's way easier to spot what you need to work on technically, but it's the soft part that's usually not very clear because you're usually influenced by your own view of things. If you're not already doing that, try adding 3 soft skills to your development plan this year and see how big of an impact it'll have on your career.
