Over the past few months, I've engaged in numerous conversations with friends and clients about my work in #crisismanagement and I've realized it might be interesting to shed light on some persistent areas of misunderstanding. This is going to be several posts but the one I want to tackle first has to do with the most prevalent misconception around #crisisplanning in general: First and foremost, I continue to be surprised by how many people think crisis planning only applies to "catastrophic disaster" level events– as in natural disasters, or major financial or litigation scandals. This perspective often sees crisis management as an expensive luxury, suited only for large corporations with significant shareholder interests at stake. However, my experience and observations reveal a different truth. For the vast majority of businesses, particularly smaller companies and those considered to be in "lower-risk" industries, a crisis can manifest in various forms. What might initially appear as a minor issue can quickly escalate if not managed effectively. And, for many of those smaller businesses, a crisis can also have an outsized impact. Here's how I usually explain why crisis planning is crucial for businesses at every stage of growth: Broaden Your Definition of Crisis: A crisis can be any event that threatens the stability of your business or its reputation. This could be a data breach, the sudden loss of a key employee, or even negative social media attention. By understanding that crises can vary in scale and impact, a business can better prepare for the unexpected. Preparation Minimizes Disruption: Small disruptions can have disproportionately large impacts on business operations, especially for smaller businesses. Crisis preparedness lessens the impact on your operations and bottom line. Crisis Plans as a Growth Strategy: For emerging businesses, demonstrating robust crisis preparedness can be a competitive advantage, enhancing trust with investors and stakeholders. It shows foresight and maturity, qualities crucial for long-term partnerships and business growth. Learning Opportunities: Every company should routinely conduct vulnerability audits to identify their weaknesses—this is fundamental. If you do create a create a crisis plan, regularly updating and testing it is crucial. These processes not only reveal your preparedness but also enhance your response capabilities. Reputation Management in the Digital Age: In the digital realm, where minor issues can quickly spiral in a matter of hours, the speed of your response is crucial. The ability to respond quickly and decisively is paramount. Confidence and Morale: Knowing that there is a clear plan in place can bolster management confidence and morale. “If a problem can be solved, then there is no need to worry. If it cannot be solved, then there is no point in worrying either.” Let’s break this down. In property management, challenges and issues are inevitable. From maintenance problems to resident complaints, a day rarely goes by without some issue arising. This quote offers a powerful perspective on handling these situations effectively. 1. If a problem can be solved, then there is no need to worry: Many problems we encounter in property management have solutions. Whether it’s a leaky faucet, a noisy neighbor, or a delayed delivery, these issues can be resolved through communication, action, and sometimes a bit of creativity. Instead of worrying, we should focus on finding and implementing the solution. This proactive approach not only alleviates stress but also builds trust and satisfaction among residents and staff. 2. If it cannot be solved, then there is no point in worrying either: Some problems are beyond our control. For instance, unexpected regulatory changes or natural disasters can present challenges that can’t be immediately resolved. In such cases, worrying doesn’t help. Instead, accepting the situation and focusing on what can be done whether it’s preparing for the impact, communicating transparently with residents, or developing contingency plans, can make a significant difference. How do we apply this to our day. By adopting this mindset, property managers can maintain a calm and collected approach to their work. Understanding that some issues have solutions and others are simply out of our control allows us to manage our resources and energy more effectively. It encourages a problem-solving attitude and reduces unnecessary stress, ultimately leading to a more positive and productive environment for both staff and residents. Worrying is unproductive, ineffective, and extra work/ stress that is complete unneeded.

One of the major value features of our True North Radical Resilience program - is what we refer to as - Radical Resilience Crisis Consulting. What is this - and what value does this bring to a business (you might ask)?? Well - last week - I had a family run business schedule a half day with me - to utilize this feature. This business has created extraordinary wealth for the family - and they now employ hundreds of employees. Having said this - family dynamics can be tricky (I was trained in a family systems program - so - I know exactly how family dynamics can undermine family members sense of resilience!!). In this situation - 4 key family members involved in the family business - were experiencing conflict - and instead of responding in a resilient manner - they were tiptoeing around the core issues. In our half day consulting session - we were able to get honest with each other (by setting clear parameters for how we were going to communicate with each other - and anchoring our efforts to a shared values driven vision!) - - and - using a blend of motivational interviewing techniques - assetive communication skills - and being solution focused - we were able to identify 3 key actionable takeaways - that all parties were agreeable to (these were clear - win/win strategies!). At the end of this session - I asked if the core issues had been effectively resolved - and if everyone felt comfortable moving forward together - and I received a resounding - YES 🙌 - from all 4 family members! And you could see the visible results from our work together - as they went from being in defensive postures - to - being fully engaged - looking like they collectively shed a thousand pounds of stress and pressure. Even better - they called several other family members - and invited them to have lunch together (on a family yacht 🛥️!) - and I got to see them meet in my office parking lot - as I got hugs and handshakes from all the family members!! Why did they hug me - and shake my hand?? Well - first off - they trust me (I’ve been working with this family for several months now) - but - more specifically - they were thrilled to get back to the business of winning together. Because - this unresolved conflict had become a sticking point - and the family and business were suffering the effects of it. Now - with this issue resolved - they can put their collective focus on growing and expanding!! That’s the beauty of what I get to do!! Resilience. What is it, and why does it matter? More to the point, what can we do to improve the resilience of our organizations and communities? Important questions. Let's dive in. WHAT IS RESILIENCE? Resilience provides a perspective to understand how organizations and networks respond to change. Resilience is both a characteristic and a process. An organization that has resilience can absorb change and continue to function. Resilience is also a dynamic process of collective learning, adaptation (learning new routines), and (in some cases) transformation (setting out on a new path). Managing this process requires new skills, behaviors, and approaches, as we will see. Without putting too fine a point on it, resilience reflects the ability of networks of people (including organizations, communities, and societies) to prosper in the face of ever-changing environments. RESILIENCE: WHY NOW? There is no mystery here. Since at least the 1990s, globalization, powered by the Internet, has spawned a very different reality that we now inhabit. The impact of our human actions on each other and the planet has increased with our connectivity. Our socio-technical systems -- for example, artificial intelligence or our financial markets -- and our socio-ecological systems -- our interactions with the planet -- present us with a growing array of disruptions—everything from floods and firestorms to pandemics and political extremism. How do we respond to these shocks? ADAPTIVE MANAGEMENT Virtually all of the conventional approaches to management assume that we are operating in a relatively stable environment. We can see these traditional management practices in classic project management routines. These practices are grounded in a reductionist logic -- taking apart the problem. But these conventional practices must be revised when we face a radically changing environment. We face unique, often unanticipated situations—events we have not confronted before. In these situations, we need a new approach: a practice of adaptive management. Adaptive management is designed to enhance resilience through connection and collective learning. It sees organizations as networks embedded in other networks. The focus is less on planning and controlling and more on designing and doing. Adaptive management practices combine our knowledge and experience to convert crises into windows of opportunity and collective learning. Does Your Company Practice What It Preaches When It Comes To Resilience? If Not, It Really Needs To Start. I probably sound like a broken record. Resilience. Definition: "the capacity to withstand or to recover quickly from difficulties; toughness." And yet its dismissed as simply a buzzword by many in corporate life.
