PRODUCTIVITY Sometimes I get the question of how I manage to do all the things I do, ranging from pursuing a Ph.D., leading a startup, managing a research lab, posting on social media, running marathons, tossing heavy things at the gym, and maintaining social relationships. I have no simple answer, but here are some of the things I do to get things done: - Three hours of deep work each day - I block time early in the morning and protect it like my life is on the line. I ask myself, what is the most important thing I should work on now, and I solely focus on that during those three hours. This makes me accomplish much work in a short amount of time, and the state of flow and mastery contributes to my well-being. - Plan - I plan my days and weeks with projects and meetings that support my long-term goals. - I prioritize my health - running and lifting weights are my favorite part of the day. It helps me get a "break" from my head and also supports my creativity. I made a promise several years ago that I would never sacrifice my health for my career. I sleep 7-8 hours per night and eat clean food that energizes me. - Delegate - I realized that as a leader, it's not my job to be in the "trees", it's "seeing the forest", and matching people's strengths with certain parts of projects. - Go to bed early and wake up early - I wake up at 04:30-05:30 AM and go to bed at 09:00 PM. Having hours early in the morning just for myself is vital. Waking up earlier is one of my best realizations for getting more things done. - I learn by "educating" on social media. It helps me to synthesize what I'm learning in school, life, or business and it gives me meaning and nourishes my self-expression to share it with others. - I say no to things that are not a "hell yes" - This applies both to social and professional requests. I'm ruthlessly true to myself when deciding where I devote my energy to. That being said, I'm constantly re-evaluating the things I'm doing, because I know that I can do anything, but not everything. I'm also learning how to be "human", which is sometimes hard when you have big goals to strive for. Finally, I'm aware that I have no family and just have to think about myself at the moment. Have you ever experienced a situation where you were working hard but not working smart? What did you learn from that experience? #IOTD #hardwork #success #LinkedInNewsAsia I am sure, some of us have found ourselves in situations where hard work doesn't necessarily produce the optimal outcomes due to a lack of strategic thinking or efficiency. Let me give an example a project in my previous role where I devoted long hours to meet deadlines for the authority compliance inspections, but the outcomes were below and average. Reflecting on this experience, I realized the importance of working smart. The situation taught me that working hard is commendable, yet it must be coupled with working smart for true self worth. Simply pouring in hours without a well-thought-out plan or understanding of priorities can lead to burnout and inefficiency. It's crucial to identify key tasks, allocate time efficiently, and leverage resources effectively. Working smart involves strategic planning, prioritization, and leveraging available tools or technologies. In my case, I learned to streamline workflows, delegate tasks appropriately, and adopt time-management techniques. This shift not only enhanced productivity but also allowed for a better work-life balance. Moreover, recognizing the significance of continuous learning is pivotal in working smart. Embracing new skills, staying updated with industry trends, and seeking feedback contribute to growth and efficiency. In my subsequent endeavors, I made it a point to invest time in acquiring new knowledge, which significantly improved my problem-solving abilities and overall performance. In conclusion, the sheer hard work might not have yielded the desired outcomes due to a lack of strategic approach. It encourages individuals to appreciate the synergy between diligence and intelligence, emphasizing that success often came from a combination of hard work and smart decision-making. Personal experiences in such situations become valuable lessons, shaping one's approach to future endeavors and reinforcing the importance of working smart alongside working hard.

Do you struggle with everything just being too much sometimes? The matrix method, often referred to as the Eisenhower Matrix or the Urgent-Important Matrix, is a time management tool that helps prioritize tasks based on their urgency and importance. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to use it: The matrix is divided into four quadrants: Quadrant I: Urgent and Important Quadrant II: Not Urge nt but Important Quadrant III: Urgent but Not Important Quadrant IV: Not Urgent and Not Important Define Urgency and Importance: Urgent tasks require immediate attention and are usually associated with deadlines or immediate consequences. Important tasks contribute to long-term goals, values, and overall mission. Write down all the tasks you need to accomplish. Be as comprehensive as possible, including both work-related and personal tasks. Place each task into one of the four quadrants: Quadrant I (Do First): These are tasks that are both urgent and important. They need immediate attention and typically have significant consequences if not completed promptly. Examples include crises, deadlines, and urgent meetings. Quadrant II (Schedule): These are tasks that are important but not urgent. They contribute to long-term goals and personal development. Scheduling time for these tasks helps prevent them from becoming urgent. Examples include planning, strategizing, and personal development. Quadrant III (Delegate): These are tasks that are urgent but not important. They often interrupt and can be delegated to others. Examples include certain emails, phone calls, and meetings that don’t directly contribute to long-term goals. Quadrant IV (Eliminate): These are tasks that are neither urgent nor important. They are often distractions and can be minimized or eliminated. Examples include time-wasting activities like excessive internet browsing or watching TV. Take Action: Focus on completing Quadrant I, scheduling Quadrant II, delegating Quadrant III and limit or eliminate Quadrant IV. Remember that over-working yourself is not the key to success, prioritising your mental and physical health is!
