Beyond the Four Five -Digit Figure: Why Digital Marketing Beats Networking (Sometimes) Recently, I attended a business meeting where the host, in their eagerness to promote a networking group, made a bold claim: "Spend four Five digits every month on Digital marketing and get no results? Join this network instead!" While I applaud their advocacy for networking, I believe this statement paints an incomplete picture of the dynamic relationship between networking and digital marketing. Digital marketing, a vast and ever-evolving industry, offers businesses a powerful toolkit to reach, engage, and convert customers. From targeted social media campaigns to data-driven SEO strategies, digital marketing enables businesses to connect with the right audience on the right platforms, often at a fraction of the cost of traditional networking events. This isn't to say that networking should be discounted. Building genuine connections with industry professionals is invaluable. However, relying solely on networking groups without a solid digital marketing foundation can lead to missed opportunities and limited reach. Imagine this- you attend a networking event and meet several potential clients. But how do you follow up effectively? How do you stay top-of-mind in their crowded inboxes? This is where digital marketing comes in. A well-crafted campaign, engaging social media content, or personalized website landing pages can nurture those leads and convert them into loyal customers. So, the next time you hear someone say "Ditch the Digital marketing, join the network," remember this: Digital Marketing is not a competitor to networking, but a complementary force. It amplifies your efforts, extends your reach, and builds lasting connections with your target audience. Of course, the effectiveness of each approach depends on your specific industry, target audience, and budget. The key is to find the right balance between building meaningful relationships and leveraging the power of digital marketing. Networking on LinkedIn: The game-changing approach that increased my qualified leads by 30%... LinkedIn is the world's largest networking platform. It's different than Facebook or Instagram because unlike those two "social media" platforms, originally created to help people share their lives with friends, LinkedIn has always been about connecting professionals to other professionals. Why is this important? In an effort to monetize, Facebook makes it extremely challenging for professionals to reach potential customers organically because they want to sell ads - ads that have become increasingly competitive! LinkedIn, on the other hand, rewards consistent organic thought leadership. If you've struggled to grow a following on LinkedIn, or connect with prospects and peers, you can change all of that starting today. 1. Your personal LinkedIn account is your greatest asset on this platform. Start by optimizing your profile. -> Your headline should communicate what you do and who you do it for. It should be clear! You only have so much real estate to work with, and your headline is ALWAYS visible, whether you send a connection request, or comment on a post. Phrases like "Finance Ninja" or "Software Guru" are missing the mark and don't help your audience to understand WHY they should connect with you. -> Your about section should tell your customer narrative. When you connect with people for the first time, and they click on your profile to see what you're about, your "about" section should be informative, to say the least. Check out my about section to see what I'm talking about. Ryan Musselman also has a great example of this on his profile. There are other aspects of your profile that you should optimize, including your header image, profile picture, and custom buttons. #ReachOut if you want me to take a look! 2. Create authentic content that people will latch onto or find value in. -> If you're being genuine, the content you post should relate to what you do and what you know. You don't necessarily have to reinvent the wheel. What you should know really well is your business, your industry, your customers. Think about the things people never get to see, might not know, or can implement themselves - that's a great place to start! -> Consistency is key. Make it an "easy goal", as Jon Acuff says in his book All It Takes Is A Goal, to post once a day on LinkedIn for 1 week. To make it even easier, start with the goal of sitting down for 15 minutes at the beginning of that week to map out the topics you'll post on. I like to think about my areas of expertise #b2bmarketing #salesstrategy #leadgeneration. If I post on each one of those once in the week I'm already 3/5 of the way to my goal. There's a little more to it than that, but I only have so many characters I can post, lol.
