Why solving team problems often fails? 2️⃣ ways of approaching team problems. Recently I coached a manager struggling with weekly team meetings going over time. Sometimes they lasted for 3 long, painful hours where they discussed everything without focus. 😬 The manager intuitively tried to fix this problem by fixing the process. Introduce weekly 1:1s where they would go through individual tasks and then hope that changes the dynamic in the team weekly. Sounds reasonable. It did to me as well until we started going a bit deeper (that's the power of a great coaching session). We found that the process changes are just a part of the solution. And the second part at that. That's because a change in process will only address the symptoms and not the underlying reasons of the issue. ⭐️ The other (first) part of the solution is the human approach. Talk to people about the behaviors you notice that are derailing the meeting. Uncover and address the underyling issues. Most often, people don't feel heard or seen so they take the only opportunity they get to share everything they've done (and even what's going on in their private life). Once you understand that you can then start creating more opportunities for them to be heard and seen and then change the process accordingly. It's not that one approach is better than the other. Both are necessary. The problem is, we often resort to simply changing the process because that's easier. It doesn't involve having (potentially) uncomfortable conversations and dealing with the human side of people. I know I struggle with that often. Being more introverted I have to actively remind myself to lean into the human side and uncover and address the underlying issues. And having someone (like a coach) who can help you see the perspective you don't see, can be of great help. I know it is for me. What are your thoughts? The Value of Getting to Know Each Other Better in Teams This is part 2 in a serie of articles that describes possible steps in a team coaching journey. What are the benefits: 1. Enhanced Communication and Collaboration: When team members know each other well, they are more likely to communicate openly and effectively, leading to better collaboration and problem-solving. 2. Improved Team Dynamics: Understanding the thinking and behaving preferences of team members can lead to improved team dynamics, as it helps individuals understand what everyone else brings to the team and how to best interact with their counterparts. 3. Increased Trust: Team activities that facilitate getting to know each other better can foster trust among team members, which is critical for effective teamwork. 4 Identifying Strengths and Gaps: Getting to know individual team members can help the team to identify each individual's strengths, improvement areas and perspectives which is essential for effective team cooperation. Activity for Getting to Know Each Other Better in Teams There are various activities and games that can be used to facilitate getting to know each other better in teams. As an example we used the personal user manual (drawify.com). First every individual made his/her personal manual. Than they shared it in small groups (3ppl). And in the end the whole group shared their insights together. Although the group knew each other for years, they where amazed that they learned a lot of things of each other that they didn’t know yet. Conclusion In conclusion, the value of getting to know each other better in teams cannot be overstated. It leads to enhanced communication, improved team dynamics, increased trust, personal growth, and a more cohesive and effective team overall. Utilizing various activities and games can help facilitate this process and contribute to a positive and productive team environment.
