Everyone tells me, “I know that listening and acknowledging are ‘the right thing to do’” and they wish they could do it because, “A good person does it.” But, there seems to be a big split between “The right thing to do” and GETTING THINGS DONE! Of course, people want to do the right thing and be a good person, and the people I teach really are good people already. But more than anything, they need to GET THINGS DONE! Reading the room is essential for an effective session. Facilitation Diaries: 15 Have you ever heard your participants say things like "I am a lazy person," "I procrastinate," "I get angry easily," "I'm always late," "I can’t focus," or "I’m bad at time management"? You know how discouraging it can be when people see problems as part of themselves. Externalization, a technique from narrative therapy, can transform this dynamic by encouraging participants to view problems as separate from themselves, making them easier to tackle. When participants think "I am the problem," they often feel stuck and powerless. By externalizing the problem, they can see it as something they can work on and overcome, rather than a fixed part of their identity. Consider a participant named Aysha who struggles with managing her temper. Instead of thinking, "I have a bad temper," Aysha learns to say, "Managing my temper is something I’m working on." This subtle shift helps Aysha feel more in control and ready to find solutions. To apply externalization in group training, start by helping participants change their language. Encourage them to reflect on the impact of thinking "I am the problem" and to use phrases like "Anxiety is something I’m dealing with" instead of "I’m always anxious." Next, find moments when participants have overcome challenges. Help them see multiple stories about themselves by asking them to recall incidents where they acted with confidence. Finally, encourage participants to continue using externalization in their daily lives. You don’t think you are necessary? Then learn politely to say « no » Saying « no » is more respectful towards your colleagues than forcing yourself to a useless « yes » How to say no to a meeting? ✌️Be polite and respectful 📝Request to receive the report by email ⏳or try turning the meeting into a 5-minute call to move the project forward #TimeManagement #NoMeeting

Attitude is everything! I could have called this Intent is everything but I like the flying link in and we all want to fly high. How do you approach the day when you wake up in the morning? It's so easy to wake up tired, start thinking of what you have to do that day and think 'oh no, not another day!' Well, how you approach the day has a massive effect on how you handle the day and how you succeed that day. Our brains are amazing, but they can also be easily tricked. We create our feelings by our thoughts so the thinking at the beginning of the day can create how we feel that day. And how you feel is what helps you win or lose the day. I'm sure you've heard of using the Superman pose for when you need to have some self belief going into something. Meetings are the same. The attitude you have towards them affects how well they go. the intent makes a difference. Just as importantly, the purpose of the meeting is key. When you have a purpose for you meeting, you set an intent. This makes you feel more confident about the meeting which allows you to have the best attitude. You will then bring that attitude into the meeting which creates a much better environment. Wouldn't it be great if you could pivot from meetings to a more effective way of getting things done. How would that change your attitude? That's exactly what a workshop is. It brings purpose and engagement to meetings and works towards leaving with an action plan. A master facilitator can bring exactly this to you. How good would that be? #facilitator #attitude

If I ask my clients what words come to mind when I say #meetings’ the most common thing that comes up is BORING ok, also frustrating, Aaaaaa! (fill in your scream of panic), nothing happens really, etc. But BORING is the big champion here. Why? You know why, don’t you ;) Because it is a repetitive pattern where there is little to no progress happening. The meetings many people experience are not helping them move their work forward. Quite the opposite - they finish their meetings disgruntled, tired even, and frustrated. Imagine the impact on the work they are supposed to do after the meeting … It is bound to suffer. So what are the skills that can turn that around that are worth exploring? In one word (ok, 4 words): gentle but firm facilitation. That translates into knowing how to >> estimate the time something will take >> gently bring back the focus when the group derails off-course >> discern if a spontaneous conversation is worth continuing or should it rather become a full-blown agenda point on the next meeting >> engage all participants, extraverts and introverts alike >> infuse humour in the meetings without risking the meeting becomes a mere chitchat >> bring a feeling of connection even when people don’t agree on things >> prevent the toxic positivity from sneaking in and taking over the sincerity needed to bring tangible results. All that and more. And yes, meeting #facilitation is a skill you can train. And it’s a skill you can recycle every time you have any kind of conversation. It helps improve your #communication and #leadershipskills, it helps you figure out what the needs of a group are before they can articulate them, and it brings you a tremendous amount of joy in being able to connect with your colleagues on a deeper level.
