These types of programs should be universal and many are surprised to learn they are not. For far too many students with disabilities, the floor drops out from under them at 21 when they age out of special education services into a fragmented, underfunded and inadequate adult services landscape where the onus is on the families and caregivers to fight for funding and services. Most of them will face wait lists that are decades long. Transition planning is critical as is the need for more postsecondary and training options targeted for students with autism and other developmental disabilities. We can't fix the massive underemployment of people with disabilities without addressing this gap. #highereducation #specialeducation #disabilitiesinclusion
The schools provide a bridge from school to the workforce through specialized instruction, social-emotional learning and opportunities to complete paid work at local companies.

The WorkAbility I (WAI) program provides comprehensive pre-employment skills training, employment placement and follow-up for high school and post-secondary program students in Special Education who are making the transition from K12 school to work, independent living, and postsecondary education or training. WAI provides secondary students with an understanding of job-seeking and job-keeping skills. The employability of students improves through occupational class training and on-the-job subsidized or unsubsidized work experience. The WAI program seeks employers in the business community who will give students with disabilities a chance to prove themselves in a competitive integrated employment setting. Local WAI program staff will coordinate with participating businesses to ensure a successful work-based learning experience for both the student and the employer. https://lnkd.in/gKRwBNfk

3 Reasons Why You Shouldn’t Work at North Star Community Trust Not every organisation is the right fit for everyone, and that’s okay! At North Star Community Trust, we’re proud of our mission to transform lives through education—but here are three reasons why we might not be the place for you: 1️⃣ We Have High Expectations Working with us means constantly striving for excellence. If you’re not ready to meet ambitious goals, improve outcomes for children, and go the extra mile for disadvantaged communities, you might find our values challenging. 2️⃣ We’re a Team, Not Silos Collaboration across schools and departments is how we achieve success. If you prefer working in isolation or aren’t ready to share ideas and best practices across a Trust-wide network, our “Stronger Together” ethos might not suit you. 3️⃣ We’re Focused on Growth From tailored CPD to leadership opportunities, we invest heavily in career development. If you’re not excited by the chance to learn, be challenged, and make a real difference, this might not feel like the right environment. If these challenges inspire rather than deter you, we’d love to hear from you. At North Star Community Trust, we’re shaping futures—not just for children, but for our team too. 🌟 Marino Charalambous 👉 #StrongerTogether #EducationCareers #Vacancies #Opportunities
