At Birmingham City University, we’re proud to support the incredible maternity support workers (MSWs) who play a vital role in the NHS workforce. Recently, we had the privilege of hosting Lisa Jesson – Deputy Lead Midwife at NHS England, at the Maternity Support Worker Conference, where she shared inspiring insights about the value of MSWs and the importance of collaboration in education and training. Key Takeaways from Lisa’s Talk: 🔹MSWs are essential to delivering safe, high-quality care for women and families. 🔹 NHS England’s investment in the workforce includes the 2024 Maternity Support Worker Competency, Education, and Career Development Framework and its accompanying toolkit, designed to upskill MSWs and strengthen services. 🔹 Collaboration between higher education institutions and NHS employers is critical. By aligning curricula with national frameworks, we ensure MSWs are equipped with the knowledge, skills, and behaviours to excel in their roles. At BCU, we are proud to celebrate and support the incredible contributions of maternity support workers, whose dedication and compassion transform lives every day. Through education and apprenticeships, we empower them to build meaningful careers and shape a brighter, stronger future for our communities. 💙 If your organisation is looking to upskill existing staff or hire new talent through apprenticeships, explore our Senior Healthcare Support Worker (Maternity) Cert HE course: https://lnkd.in/eRcfiT6W #BCU #MaternitySupportWorkers #NHS #HealthcareHeroes #EducationAndTraining #Apprenticeships #WorkforceDevelopment #HigherEducation #SkillsForTheFuture #CareerDevelopment #LifelongLearning #EmpoweringCareers #HealthAndCareWorkforce #Collaboration #NHSWorkforce #Upskilling #CommunityImpact #QualityCare #SupportingEducation #StrongerTogether

I am very rarely an advocate of online 'rants', particularly on LinkedIn, however I was unbelievably disappointed this morning to hear Patricia Marquis, misrepresent and devalue non-university routes into nursing during an interview on talkRADIO. Patricia spoke for 10 minutes with #MikeGraham about the crisis in nursing, and the associated challenges in training new talent. I quote a portion of Patricia's speech below: “There needs to be investment into students, an increase in the number of student nurses and funding for students to enable them to take up the offers of places at university to become nurses… …there are people who need support to gain the academic ability to register as a nurse, and there are routes to support them through nursing associate programmes, through apprenticeships etc but actually dumbing down the profession that delivers really significant safety critical care to patients every single day is not a good idea.” The only mention Patricia made to apprenticeships was as an option for those 'less academically able' than student nurses or 'not capable of studying at university'. She missed multiple opportunities to highlight or advocate for apprenticeships as powerful, effective routes into nursing or as a key part of the solution to the staffing and retention crisis she so eloquently described. This was not a regional training manager, or a university representative - this was the Director of RCN England - a strategic level thought leader representing the Nursing Profession across the UK. A ten minute slot on drivetime radio was a golden opportunity to advocate for the incredible opportunities that degree apprenticeships present for individuals, employers, and the wider NHS at a time when we so desperately need an innovative, solution focussed approach. It would seem unfortunately that Patricia either doesn't understand the options, or doesn't believe in them. Either way, I remain desperately disappointed in her approach. Let me say it again for those who STILL do not understand... - Apprenticeships are NOT for those less able! They are an sector focussed, powerful, and effective career and workforce development tool delivered by incredible industry professionals. - There is more than one way to gain a degree! - Health and Care apprentices are incredible - the holistic skillset needed to study full time alongside a developing career, maintain an often full private life, and care diligently for patients demonstrate a depth of character that few can match. The staffing crisis in the NHS will not be solved via a single solution or provision of training. We have got to start having grown up conversations about the complimentary routes into training and cease the narrative that universities can service the burden of training alone. They cannot. #apprenticeships #degreeapprenticeships #rcnengland #nursing #nursetraining #innovation #advocateforapprenticeships #talkradio #mikegraham #dobetter

THE JOURNEY OF BEING A FINAL YEAR STUDENT Being a final year nursing student is a mix of excitement, exhaustion, and a lot of perseverance. I started my final year this September, and to say it’s been a whirlwind would be an understatement. The pressure of preparing for professional exams looms large, and every textbook feels like a mountain I need to climb. Add to that the bills that never seem to stop coming, and the constant balancing act of managing school, personal life, and finances—it can be overwhelming at times. The extra hours of studying have become routine, and while I’m grateful for the opportunity to learn and grow, the burnouts are real. There are days when I question how much more I can handle, but I remind myself that this is all part of the journey. Not to mention the constant flow of projects, assignments, and practicals it feels like there’s always something on the horizon. But through it all, I’m doing my best to stay focused and navigate through. One thing I’ve learned is the importance of taking things one step at a time. The stress, the deadlines, and the pressure all have an end point. I’m so close to the finish line, and I can’t wait to graduate next year with my degree. To all my fellow final-year students, we’re in this together! Keep pushing, keep learning, and keep believing in yourself. It’s all going to be worth it. 💪🎓 #FinalYearNursing #NursingStudentJourney #NursingExams #StudentLife #NursingSchool #LinkedinAccessibiltyandVisibilitywithoyin #49dayschallengevalinkedinbootcampwithtma
