Benefits of Assisting in Other Communications Sub-Units Assisting in other communications sub-units is for your benefit as much as it is for the team you are assisting. You get to learn and improve on new skills that are not on your job scope, this is an opportunity for you to diversify your skill set. Most teams are always happy to have an extra pair of hands assisting them, so it’s a win for both parties. This exposure can assist you to branch out into other roles in communications, you can start in internal communications and move to external communications by extending a helping hand to the respective teams. It’s easy to feel as though other teams are “using” you when you do not get direct credit for your contributions. Do not let this discourage you from contributing, focus on your end goal, which learning and diversifying your skill set. Being an all-rounder in communications is key for career development, it gives you more options when you are applying for jobs. At times people graduate from university with a communications qualification and apply broadly for internal and external communications roles, marketing, media relations, social media, etc, and any other role that needs a communication qualification. With this broad search and scarcity of jobs, it is not many people that have a choice on the job that they end up taking. Interviews do not come by easily, so when a person manages to get their foot in the door, they go all in to secure the job. A person can graduate from university knowing that their passion is marketing, but if they get a role in media, chances are they will take it. Get the experience and hone their skills, sometimes they may end up loving the role, and sometimes they continue to apply for their area of passion. "One month answered three years of questions" After several Internship opportunities in PR, including government sectors, private companies, and startups, I became certain and wondered: What does it take to be a skilled public relations specialist with all the required skills? I was particularly fascinated by PR Agencies and wondered about their inner workings and the specific responsibilities of each team member. What impressed me even more was how someone could manage multiple client accounts and meet their needs? How do they create different strategies and employ different tactics for each client? How do they monitor and adjust their approaches? How do they handle reports, RFPs, market studies, competitor analysis, and Crisis management strategies? I had some knowledge about these aspects, but I doubted whether these were the right ways. So, I asked and observed professional specialists who carried out these tasks. It's been a month, but there have been dozens of questions and inquiries that occupied my mind over the past three years. I was desperate for answers. Of course, one month was not enough to learn everything, but it was enough for me to find out what I lacked and direct me towards what I wanted, just as I knew what I wanted to choose in the future. In the coming period, I hope to immerse myself in learning and practical experience in the world of PR agencies. One crucial lesson I've learned, as my manager told me, "is that real-world experience in this field comes from years of work, facing challenges, making mistakes, and learning from them". This also took me to learn about several markets that I was not aware of and see what is going on around them such as Fintech, Real estate, Electric cars, Outsourcing, Finance and CX. The month enabled me to develop some of my technical skills, such as Research and Analysis skills. This is what made me have an initial view of any company, knowing its direction in CSR activities, How much its strength in media coverage, the tactics it follows, and what it lacks in working on.. So, I'm committed to continuing my journey over the next two years. Over the last few weeks, I’ve come understand different dimensions of my job as a Development Communications Specialist. You’d think communication is all about reporting things in a succinct way but it goes beyond that. You’ll have to make sure your brand is well represented, you’d have to think on your feet for other viable options to treat a problem. You’d have to sacrifice to ensure things go well with your event. You’d have to find strategic ways to amplify your corporations project to the public and you’ll have to write speaking notes and other stuff for dignitaries for events. It’s what make the work beautiful. I’m glad I chose this career path

5 things I wish I knew before choosing Mass Communication- Choosing a career path after high school marks the pivotal of every student's life. It is like crossroads where the paths ahead diverge into a multitude of possibilities.The pressure to make the "right" decision, advice from family and friends, and the sheer variety of options can make this process daunting. Especially while you are choosing an out of the box option like Mass communication. Exactly three years ago I had a set of questions in my mind regarding this field but no one to guide except the internet which was flooded with a variety of manipulative advertisements by various Institutions. But now after recently completing my grad I realized there were a few things which I must have known before I chose my career path. Here are the top 5 things I wish I knew before choosing Mass Communication- 1. Wider career scope- Mass communication is not just about journalism or broadcasting. It's an umbrella term that covers specializations such as public relations, advertising, digital media, film production, and even event management. Understanding this breadth early on would have helped me navigate my interests more effectively and choose electives that aligned better with my career aspirations. 2. The Power of Networking- While the academic curriculum provides a solid foundation, the real magic happens outside the classroom. Building relationships with peers, professors, industry professionals, and even alumni can open doors to internships, job opportunities, and collaborations. I wish I had known the importance of attending industry events, joining professional groups, and leveraging platforms from the get-go. 3. Practical and hands-on experience- Mass communication programs are heavily inclined towards practical, hands-on experience. From working in the college media team to running a film club till participating in various events has obviously helped me. But I wish I had been better prepared for the long hours, tight deadlines, and the necessity of multitasking. 4. The Importance of Technical Skills- In today’s digital age, technical proficiency is non-negotiable. Knowing how to operate a camera, edit videos, use design softwares and handle social media is crucial. While I learnt some of these skills during the course, I underestimated how much of a head start I would have had by familiarizing myself with these tools beforehand. Especially now while working in a digital marketing agency I understand why it was necessary to learn them. 5. The Value of a Strong Portfolio- In mass communication, your portfolio is your passport. It's a showcase of your skills, creativity, and experience. I wish I had started building my portfolio from day one, documenting every project, article, or piece of content I created. A well-curated portfolio not only helps in securing internships and jobs but also serves as a reflection of your growth and learning over the years.
