Strategic Communications Lead at RSE I Award-winning Global Internal and External Communications Consultant Julie Myatt Consultancy | Strategic Communications
👋 Hey there, fellow communicators! This weekend, I find myself inspired to start writing ✍️ a series of blog posts called…wait for it… The Art of Effective Internal Communication: Uniting Minds, Igniting 🧨Change. Cool 😎 title, right?!! It took me a ridiculous amount of time to think it up (yes, yes I know I need to get out more but I looove 💙 writing!) The series will be aimed at revisiting the fundamentals of successful internal communications 👍🏻 Let's dive 🤿 into what it takes to excel as a communications professional As I am sure we all know… it's more than just sharing those 🎙️core messages; it's about sparking 🎨 creativity and excitement across all levels of an organisation. From seasoned C-suite executives to newbies, the collective engagement towards a shared vision 👀 is crucial. Let's strive for every employee to not only understand 🤔 their role within an organisation, but to also feel valued and 🥇appreciated for their contributions. So how do we do that? Fabulously 🤩dynamic strategic comms is how! One of our main 🥅 goals is to build connections; bridge 🌁 that gap between the leaders making the decisions (the change sponsors) with those of us on the coal face who need to make the changes (the implementers or the change champions). It’s so important that every employee understands the direction 🛣️ an organisation is going. Clarity, connections and understanding serves as the linchpin for driving 🚘 an organisation forward. Oh and here’s an important bit: a disengaged workforce not only jeopardises morale ☹️but also affects customers and clients. We need teams to understand 🤨them inside out, to add real value to every interaction. That's why killer 🌟 internal comms isn't just nice to have; it's a game-changer for boosting morale, slashing turnover, and keeping those customers happy 👍🏻 So, what's the plan? Let's fix 🛠️ those broken channels and guide people through the 📣noise, so they pack a punch 🥊 and boost that ROI 💷 Let’s influence attitudes and behaviours by communicating 📰 a mission and values with clarity. Let every team member feel integral to overarching objectives. 🌟 Let's Recap: ✅ Ensure every colleague understands their role within the organisation. ✅ Foster connections between sponsors and implementers. ✅ Unlocking success means colleagues understanding customers inside and out! 🔍 Remember to think outside the box 📦 while staying strategic (take those informed but creative risks – everything will stay the same 🥱if we’re not innovative). In the busy, bustling world of internal communications, make an impact without overwhelming the audience with too much noise. 🚀 Focus on what matters. Who's with me? Let's light 💡 up those communication pathways and make magic happen! 📻 Stay tuned for forthcoming posts! #BeCreative #InternalCommunications #SharedVision

R+A’s Senior Vice President Ilana Simon Rubin reflects on the importance of internal communications to an organization’s overall communications strategy: “Often when people talk about communications campaigns, their first thought is about reaching external audiences. However, the most effective campaigns start with a strong internal communications foundation and recognize that internal stakeholders such as staff, volunteers, and board members can be the most powerful advocates and ambassadors for an institution or brand. Ensuring internal alignment on messaging will set your organization up for success externally as well, while reaping countless additional benefits.” Read more about the importance of internal communications in Forbes:

📣 "No matter the shifts within a company, communications plays a critical role in maintaining stability and charting a course to the future through smart internal comms." When planning communications surrounding change it's important that the message hits the right people at the right time and isn't lost within the inboxes of colleagues. In Ragan Communications and PR Daily, Sean Devlin has some great insight in How communicators can cut through the noise during times of changes: https://shorturl.at/emDKM I strongly agree with being upfront about change, transparency is, more often than not, key. It is never too late to share some Internal Communications trends for 2024 by Staffbase 1. Creating trust and security in turbulent times through reliable communication: "Our routine, honest, and human communication should provide security and put trust in both the information we share and the company overall." 2. Know the difference between #storytelling and #narrative "With narratives, the focus is more on influencing your target group than sending unrelated messages and stories. As communicators in the company, we have the opportunity to use our storytelling strategically (in collaboration with managers and top management) to create narratives that significantly influence the actions of our employees." 3. No more #ChangeManagement without communication managers: "Don't start any more change projects without the involvement of corporate communications. It simply won't work. What's more, it's time to stop internal communication from being forced into the role of saviour when it’s discovered too late that transformation processes aren’t going as well as expected." 🌟 Choosing the Right Size Story for Your Company’s Internal Communications 🌟 In the realm of internal communications, the scale of your story plays a pivotal role in engaging and inspiring your team. Selecting the right size story—whether “ME,” “WE,” or Organizational—can significantly impact how messages are received and acted upon. A “ME” story, focusing on individual experiences, offers authenticity and relatability. These personal narratives provide deep insights into specific challenges and triumphs, making complex issues more accessible and emotionally impactful. Use “ME” stories to highlight personal testimonies that bring policies to life, especially in training modules and awareness campaigns. On the other hand, “WE” stories emphasize collective experiences and team dynamics. They showcase how groups navigate challenges together, fostering a sense of community and collaboration. These stories are excellent for demonstrating the effectiveness of diverse teams and promoting team cohesion and mutual respect. Lastly, Organizational stories encapsulate the broader journey of the company. They highlight strategic decisions, leadership impacts, and pivotal moments that define your organization’s identity and mission. These stories are ideal for aligning new initiatives with the company’s values and enhancing internal cohesion. Choosing the right size story matters because it ensures that your message resonates appropriately with its audience, fostering a more engaged, informed, and unified workforce. Tailor your story’s scale to fit the context and goals of your communication for maximum impact. Here's a guide for sharing⏬
