🙌 “Great speakers are not born, they’re trained.” ~DALE CARNEGIE Great article from Quint Studer on effective internal communication (in which effective listening is essential). It made me think of one of the most influential people in my learning journey about corporate communications — April Zepeda back at The EverettClinic. (April, I should have shared this with you long ago). In addition to being hard working, insightful, and creative — I observed you to have the most incredible balance of poise and passion. With her background in journalism, April helped the leadership team craft simple, clear key messages (not an easy task in an ever changing healthcare environment!). She challenged others to refine the message so that others could join in. It taught me that internal communications aren’t just about everyone knowing the WHAT of project plans and reports…it was more about connecting others to the WHY…how they could help/how they matter…asking for feedback…and listening for what was **NOT** said. One of my favorite best practices she implementated was a quarterly managers’ hotsheet. It captured the headlines, key messages — and even key questions managers should ask while doing rounds. This tool, partnered with the discipline of manager standard work and people development led to more people feeling more connected and aligned. These messages became amplified and could easily be connected back to our corporate strategy and values.

How you talk to your employees will be very different to how you talk to the press. You might be communicating with them about the same subject, but the way you do so will look very different according to your audience. Internally, you might be briefing employees on a possible story, or one that has already hit the media, giving them as many details as they need (but not oversharing), and briefing them on what to do if they happen to be approached for comment. The messaging will be in line with the company values and aims - ensuring that there’s a cohesive message to all employees. External communications will look different in that it’ll be a company response to a story, or even you breaking the story first. It’ll usually include a ‘public facing’ version of the story, giving the details you’re happy to share but this may well be different to the details that you share with your employees. If it’s in the form of a press release then there’ll usually be a quote, or context around the story - which won’t be needed when you’re communicating with your workforce. Companies are built on communication, great communication can make or break your organisation so getting it right is key!
