Jargon: "special words or expressions that are used by a particular profession or group and are difficult for others to understand." Don't do jargon. It's one of the first things you learn in journalism training. It's very tempting to show off (in the best sense of that phrase) all your knowledge because, hey, you've been asked to write or comment on your specialist area and you don't want anyone to leave without knowing everything that you know. But there are ways of demonstrating that you have something insightful to say and using jargon isn't one of them. How do you know that all your readers understand what you're writing about as well you do? Sure, everyone knows what that technical term means, don't they? That phrase is part of the lexicon in this area, isn't it? Keep it short and to the point. A well-written release doesn't need to be five pages long. Ditch the Superlatives 🚫: Overusing superlatives to describe your company or project isn't necessary. Journalists will likely cut them out. Let the facts and achievements speak for themselves. High-Quality Visuals 📸: Attach a picture that isn't a 12-kilobyte file from 1999. High-resolution images are essential. A good visual can make a significant difference, so invest in quality. Strong Headlines 🔥: A compelling headline grabs attention. Make sure it's informative and intriguing, giving a clear idea of what the press release is about. Relevant Information 📊: Include all the essential details - the who, what, where, when, why, and how. Make it easy for journalists to find the critical information quickly. Contact Information 📧: Always provide a contact person for follow-up questions. Include their name, email, and phone number. Remember, a well-crafted press release can make all the difference in how your story is received and covered.
