The world of influencers - a 323 million market growing at double digits. This is the power of the digital world, or rather, the apparent power. Because behind the excitement of likes and followers, there lies a much more complex and sometimes deceptive reality. But let's take it step by step. First of all, we need to understand what "fake followers" are. In practice, they are artificially generated accounts or people who follow influencers without a genuine interest in their content. These can be purchased on various platforms, creating the illusion of popularity that doesn't actually exist. This phenomenon not only discredits the industry, but also poses a risk of deceiving companies that invest in advertising campaigns based on the number of followers and likes of influencers. It's like a musician selling millions of records, but no one actually listening to them. And this is where Antitrust comes into play. In November, the agency challenged Meta, the social media giant, over the practice of allowing the purchase of "followers." This raised fundamental questions about the validity and transparency of the influencer world. So, what can the industry do to ensure that the success of influencers is real and not a bluff? The answer may lie in a blockchain-based digital audit, an independent entity that certifies the success of influencers based on more solid criteria than just counting followers or likes. In the music world, where I have been working as a record executive and producer for 30 years, there aren't even adequate tools to measure the real success of an artist nowadays. Ticket sales for concerts are looked at for a more accurate idea, while when it comes to Spotify, YouTube, not to mention Facebook and Instagram, the numbers are completely inflated. I can attest to this as someone in the industry! 90% of these so-called "trappers" are scams in every sense. Unfortunately, the "quantity civilization" has destroyed music listeners, in some cases completely confusing the market and creating numerous problems for the music industry, which tries to compensate and revive the situation by leveraging the mechanisms of TV. But the logic of TV is completely different from the music market. It is true that the salaries of employees in the majors in Europe, excluding the UK, are paid with American revenues, where music is still fortunately an industry, despite the fact that the money upstream is "retained" by Spotify, YouTube, Apple, and Amazon, who have a strong influence and have brought independent labels and authors to their knees. In essence, the world of influencers and the entire digital entertainment industry needs more authenticity and transparency. A change of course is needed to bring the truth behind the numbers to light. One thing we've incorporated a lot at Muddy Paw PR in the last year is influencer marketing for our musicians. It's been amazing to see their music reviewed on YouTube channels with 30k subscribers, or as the background of a Reel or TikTok to tens of thousands. I got to write about it for Two Story Melody, and how artists can get started. Are you or your artists using influencer marketing as part of PR/marketing campaigns? What are your thoughts on it?

I think one of my favorite marketing trends happening in music right now is the viral snippet. A performer releases a snippet of a song and pays micro influencers to create dance trends, hashtag it, and literally say "this is the next big song". They do this with 7- 8 songs and then whichever one goes viral that's the song they release. I love this for a couple reasons. 1. Low risk customer testing You could drop snippets of several songs and if the reaction is poor then no one hears about the songs and you don't release them. Thinking of startup companies I love user testing and MVPs, but they do take time and resources. What would it look like to just have a couple people promote a couple features that could be coming to the product and if one catches then you prioritize launching it quickly? 2. CHEAP The best thing about this strategy is the micro influencers are truly micro. They tag the product, create the sound (tik tok) and a dozen go live at once. I did some back tracing and the follower count for many of the initial users were <1000 then the artist tagged them and it blew up. Now people were motivated to play the snippet to get seen by the artist. If done well this strategy should cost $5k a product. 3. Authentic Social media is becoming like the shirtless men in front of Ambercrombie. It feels like a human, but really we know it's mostly just people trying to sell us stuff. This strategy feels so authentic because it's just people enjoying the music and sharing their excitement for it to release. It's all manufactured, but genuine excitement with no CTA is the new CTA. How could you use this to promote your product?

What is the most effective form of music promotion? Most PRs might suggest methods like paid ads, influencer marketing, or being featured on playlists. Personally, I believe that creating contents around your music is the most effective form of music promotion. Paid ads tend to attract passive fans and often don't generate passionate followers. Influencer marketing can be expensive and, at best, may make your song trend temporarily but doesn't necessarily lead to real fans. As for playlisting, the chance of getting featured on a popular playlist is quite slim, and even if you do, many of those streams may not result in repeat listeners. On the other hand, creating content around your music not only attracts an audience but also helps nurture them into real fans. Also, it doesn't cost anything to create contents. It may take time to see results but it is definitely effective. At the end of the day, the choice depends on your goal. P.S: Collaborating with other artists follows closely after content creation. I spend 3-5 hours a week looking for new music. It's a really boring process and end up listening to some absolute garbage all in the pursuit of one gem. I trawl through blogs (feel my bicep, pitchfork etc), marketplaces (beatport, traxsource, discogs) and listening to a lot of DJ sets that I don't massively care for. It got me thinking about influencer acquisition and can also be applied to prospecting (yes another, this is what X told me about Y post, sorry not sorry). As I was doing some this morning, I realised that the reason I don't mind doing it is because of the feeling of that one song which resonates with you makes it all worth it. Lots of them, you'd never have heard of the producer until they "make it". Scouring for the right influencers takes HOURS. I read hundreds of posts. Literally hundreds in pursuit of that one that makes me think "hmm, this is a really good fit for X". You end up reading lots of things that you don't agree with, learning a lot of new points of view and sometimes, just sometimes you have that moment when you find someone who hits all the right chords (pun intended). Much of the time, brands want to partner with the biggest creators which is fine but they don't want to pay the price tag that comes with these big influencers. We need to find the up n' comers who don't have big numbers, lots of fans but others have realised that they're on the trajectory of someone that can become a thought leader and are a subject matter expert. I spoke to another b2b influencer marketer recently, they'd had their budget cut from many hundreds of thousands to just $45,000. They have to get the same results with less. They have have to go crate digging to find the best fits. Put in the work to find the influencers that will make a difference. Especially on a budget and don't get suckered in by just follower counts.

If it's the latter, consider this Know Your Audience Before crafting your music, it's crucial to understand who your music is meant for. Are you making music that's perfect for DJs to play in clubs and at parties? Or is it better suited for influencers, each specializing in their own niche? These include fashion influencers, who can use your music in their stylish content, food influencers who can include it in their culinary creations, makeup influencers to complement their tutorials, and dance influencers who can feature your music in their videos. By identifying and tailoring your music to the specific preferences and needs of these target audiences, you increase the likelihood of your music resonating with them. It's worth noting that when it comes to promoting your music, Instagram can be a powerful platform. Influencers in these categories, particularly on Instagram, can play a significant role in popularizing your music and reaching a wider audience. Whether you're making music for personal satisfaction or to earn money, understanding your motives and your audience is essential. Indie music is special because it connects with people on a personal level. So, ask yourself: Who's your music for, and are you keeping your creative spirit alive?
