But, I never really considered the effect of intention to leave and workload on #patientmortality. According to this study, "A 10% increase in intention to leave and an increase of one unit in nurse-patient workload increased likelihood of inpatient hospital mortality by 14%, respectively." Wow! Let's think about this for a second. Why do nurses want to leave their #bedside roles - #burnout, poor work-life balance, #incivility and bullying, #unsafe work environments, inadequate #staffing - the list goes on and on. None of these things happen overnight and cause you to leave the next day. They start slowly and take a toll on the nurse over weeks, months, or even years. This study highlights the impact all of these #nursingworkforce issues have on patient outcomes. All the things that make a nurse want to quit their job are important! This means we have to start attacking the problem from every angle and ensure nurses have: 💪 Supportive work environments where #teamwork and culture rule. 💰 Competitive compensation and benefits with opportunities to earn more. ⚖ Work-life balance through the use of flexible scheduling, reasonable work hours and workloads, and access to mental health resources. 👩🎓 Professional development and career advancement opportunities to support specialization and certification in areas of interest. 💙 Safe and healthy work environments, including adequate supplies and resources, policies that prioritize staff and patient safety, and education on strategies to de-escalate situations and handle aggression and violence. 🌈 Respectful and inclusive cultures that value diversity, inclusivity, and respect for all staff. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention highlight the stark disparities in health outcomes between urban and rural areas, with rural Americans facing higher risks of heart disease, cancer, injuries, respiratory conditions, and stroke compared to their urban counterparts. In 2023, North Carolina's demographer revealed that the state boasts the second largest rural population in the U.S., with nearly 3.5 million residents residing in rural areas, constituting about a third of the state's population. Addressing nursing shortages necessitates innovative solutions like masters-level nursing programs. Programs such as the one at East Carolina University College of Nursing are pivotal in training experienced nurses to take on leadership roles and bridge the healthcare gap across the state. Perinatal Quality and Safety Specialist/Author of the Obstetric & Neonatal Quality and Safety (C-ONQS) Study Guide: A Practical Resource for Perinatal Nurses/Nurse Entrepreneur
Are you familiar with the Perinatal Safety Nurse Role? Sharing some information on the value of this dedicated nurse leader role as part of a comprehensive perinatal safety program. The literature shows that maternal morbidity and mortality rates are unacceptably high in the U.S. Hence, we need to do better, and what this looks like is concerted work around building sustainable perinatal quality and safety programs and reducing preventable perinatal harm. Yet, there are many barriers to getting this work done: staffing shortages, minimal administrative time for project work, competing priorities, and lack of personnel to do the work are all examples. As such, there is a significant need for a dedicated Perinatal Safety Nurse Role, whose sole focus is on patient quality and safety efforts in collaboration with a multidisciplinary team.
