Training can reduce cyber risk up to 70% (according to KnowBe4 study in comments) Employee training is multi-purpose: - Privacy training shields your company from data breaches. - Training helps employees handle data safely and securely. - Avoid legal trouble by prioritizing security training. - Training boosts customer trust and business resilience. Training should also cover Privacy topics like: - Evolving privacy regulations. - Privacy Rights Process (required by CCPA!) - How to update a data inventory - When to complete a privacy impact assessment (PIA) - What is a privacy notice & why it matters - When its OK to collect, use, and share data - Make training as role specific as possible. - Employees will better understand the impact to them. - Training doesn't stop at the online module or 1x/year. - It should be ongoing. - Use newsletters, video, meetings, quick tips to continuously train. My toxic trait is that I love compliance. I love researching it. I love digging into the different discussions. I love looking at the reasoning behind laws, standards, and frameworks. What I don't love: Fines and penalties are the only way to "convince" a lot of organizations to implement basic cyber hygiene *and* "show their work." Compliance is like having a high school math test where you know you know the answer but the teacher takes off points when you don't show your work, even if you get the right final answer. Compliance is really one of those group projects you had - where people bring different skills with them: - Tech/IT folks get the nuances of how to architect systems and implement the technical controls (think some NIST SP 800-53) - Leadership gets the overarching business objectives about why they need to bring in SaaS apps or cloud providers or build new customer facing apps - Compliance/Audit/Legal bring that larger scale big picture from state and international regulatory bodies and industry standards organizations. In marketing or the industry, we use the phrase "cross functional" - but we don't often give good examples of it, leaving both all three groups to work separately and then hopefully cobble together a final project that makes sense. I get it, too. Change is hard, especially when people are set in their ways. Bringing ideas to the conversation feels like banging your head against a server when people are rigid and disinterested in change. At this point, I'd like to be inspirational or say "these are some good ways to overcome that." In reality, I can't do that. I can give you the empathy though - as someone who sits on a non-profit board that's trying to make changes (not related to my day job): Working with people is HARD. Changing people's minds is HARD. Building new initiatives is HARD. Much to most of my clients' chagrin, I'm going to say this to those of you out there doing the work and trying your best: I see you. I get it. No one product is going to solve your problems. And for the most part, this all just absolutely sucks. But, if we're all in it together and look at cybersecurity and privacy as a "social good" - we can make the world safer for the next generation's data. #cybersecurity #privacybydesign #compliance

VERIFICATION OF INFORMATION IS KEY IN DECISION MAKING. Looking at this below picture superficially you will see a car amongst trees. But if you zoom ( verify) the picture further, you discover no car actually exists but trees. LESSON 1. Always verify any information before you speak or take decisions on it. 2. Unverified information could be dangerous and misleading when decisions are taken based on it. 3. It could lead to litigation and lack of trust on the source of the information 4.
