Over the years, I've spent countless hours studying the techniques of Howard Stern. Love him or hate him, his influence on the media world can’t be denied. As podcasters, there are significant lessons we can learn from the "King of All Media." Here are seven key lessons I've learned from Howard Stern that can help us become better podcasters: 1. Authenticity: Stern's authentic, raw, and brutally honest persona makes his listeners feel like they know him personally. Be real and be genuine on your podcast. Authenticity builds trust and forms the foundation of a loyal audience. 2. Fearlessness: Stern never shy’s away from asking hard questions or sharing unpopular opinions. His courage is something we can all learn from. The lesson? Be bold in your approach. Your listeners will appreciate your courage to dive into difficult or even controversial topics. 3. Audience Engagement: Stern’s interaction with his audience is pure gold. He takes calls, reads fan mail, and even insults his fans…and they LOVE it! As podcasters, we must find creative ways to engage our listeners. This could be through Q&As, shout-outs, or even contests. 4. Masterful Interviewing: Stern is one of the best interviewers of all time. Why? Because he goes way beyond surface-level questions, revealing deeper insights about his guests. As podcasters, we should aim to do the same. Throw away the script, ask thoughtful questions, and listen WAY more than you speak. 5. Consistency: Stern has been on the airwaves for decades, always delivering fresh content. For podcasters, the lesson is clear: Consistent content is key to building and maintaining an audience. Be committed. Make a promise to never miss a publishing date…and stick to it. Your audience is giving you their most valuable asset: their time. Don’t let them down. 6. Humor: Stern's sense of humor adds a unique spin to his show, making it entertaining and unforgettable. Even if your podcast isn’t comedy-centric, a little humor can make your content more enjoyable and relatable to your audience. 7. Reinvention: Stern has reinvented his show over time to stay relevant. He understands his audience and always gives them (exactly) what they want. As podcasters, we shouldn't fear change. Your Listeners Will Lead The Way As a podcaster, taking stock of your past episodes and figuring out how they performed is imperative. An episode is a proof of concept, one way or the other. It can either show you what works or warn you about what doesn’t work. Every time an episode is released, it essentially serves as cold, hard data. And the numbers don’t lie. Once you unpack the research, the findings can be instructive for the future. Perhaps your episodes on social media are the most popular, meaning that you should double down and release more of them. Maybe the ones on the newspaper industry resonate less, requiring a strategic pivot to other subject matter. Whatever the case may be, always listen to your target audience. They will help you determine the right content. Sometimes, podcasters can be creative and give people what they didn’t even know that they needed. Your content strategy is the backbone of your show. It will either help you attract and keep your ideal listeners. Or it will totally turn off your ideal listeners when it's not done properly. Yet most podcasters are hoping they'll attract more podcast listeners through guesswork. Here are the three signs you're missing a robust content strategy.Slow and steady growth. New listeners discover your show and love an episode but don't love the entire show, so they leave. Listeners don't take your call to action because the content doesn't hit their 'I need to take action' spot. Other symptoms might include: Relying solely on guests, hoping they'll bring in new listeners. Guessing with content, covering different topics without audience research. Lack of content-market fit, forcing topics on listeners instead of giving them what they want. How will your growth compound if you can't get listeners back for more? You won't. That's why you need to focus on a demand based content strategy.

STOP THE PROMO SNOOZEFEST: How to Make People Actually Care About Your Guest Appearances + Contributions Alright, business fam, I’m just gonna say it. I’m seeing some killer visibility efforts and so many awesome messages being shared- podcasts, articles, speaking gigs – you name it. But then the captions sharing it with the world? Yawn city. "Check out my latest interview" doesn't exactly scream "must-listen." Truly, you’re asking folks to trade 10, 30, 60+ minutes of their super busy lives to see what you’ve been up to. Without telling them what they’re going to get out of it, without telling them why they should tune in, without so much as a single piece of value added. And no, adding, ‘I’m thrilled to share…’ with some jazz hands emoji doesn’t spice it up one iota. SNOOZE. Here's the deal: boring promotion just doesn't cut it these days. It’s YOUR job to make them want to click. How? Here's my "real talk" formula: Spill the tea: Don't just say you were on a podcast. Tease the most juicy takeaway you dropped. Flex that knowledge: Briefly highlight a unique problem you solve or a game-changing perspective you shared. (Always) Focus on THEM: Tell them what they'll get by listening/reading/watching. Focus on benefits, the results, the transformation- NOT just features. Let's take it for a (spiced up) test drive: Headlines suck? Want to learn how to write headlines that grab attention like a toddler with glitter? I just dropped some serious knowledge bombs on [Podcast Name]. If upping your engagement (like, through the roof) is on your to-do list this quarter, you're definitely going to want to tune in for this one! NOW share link. See the difference in where we started at the top vs. now? This version is catchy, clear, and promises real value. Visibility is about more than just showing up. Here we go, one year later. One year ago I launched this publication to celebrate what I could see as an emerging awareness around narrative podcasts - as compared to interview-driven shows, chatcasts, self-help shows or shows driven by the news. I listen to all kinds of podcasts. But I'm looking to help build the Pickleball Effect of Podcasting. Meaning...I want to help build the cultural awareness, the appetite and the interest around *this particular* type of podcast. Why? * Because they are incredible works of art * They are changing the way that stories are heard, told and consumed * They offer insight, gratitude, healing, awareness or just good old escapism * They are a good way to spend your time In this post, I dive into some exact things that I've learned about publishing on Substack for this past year. If you plan to pitch yourself to podcasters, please watch this. For the love of all things podcasting, please watch this. "Annoy a ton to book a few" is NOT a smart PR strategy. If you want to successfully appear on podcasts, 90% of it is to do work that leads to podcasters coming to you. But the last 10% might include some pitching, so if you've done the first 90, and you're ready for the 10, then please frame it this way: Stop trying to scale your OUTREACH and learn to grow your BOOKINGS. I shouldn't have to say it. It's kinda like me saying to a business owner to stop trying to grow followers and start trying to grow revenue. But here we are. My inbox is a mess as a host. I desperately want to avoid making other hosts feel this way when I pitch myself. So I take a different approach. In the video, I take you inside my process for crafting my pitches: 1. I use SparkToro, which full disclosure, is my official launch sponsor for How Stories Happen, to research. 2. I then go through a few additional, quick steps, that most PR firms and individuals seem hellbent on skipping -- and that's why their hit rate is so poor and they annoy so many people like me hosting shows. Chief among these is actually LISTENING TO THE SHOW YOU ARE PITCHING I CANT MAKE THIS FONT LARGE ENOUGH ON LINKEDIN BUT OH MY LORD 3. Then I craft a custom pitch email, described in the video. (I use the example of pitching myself to appear on MarketingProfs' podcast, hosted by George B. Thomas) 4. And not mentioned in the video, but I NEVER follow up more than once. Podcasters talk. We take screen shots of bad pitches and text or Slack them to each other. We know who is being pushy and who is an awesome guest. Again: annoying LOTS of people to appear on just a FEW shows ruins your reputation. Applies to PR firms. Applies to individuals. I am sick of the same generic pitches, over and over and over again. It's gotten so bad, that I've had to put up a disclaimer on my website that I don't accept outside pitches, and I instantly delete them from my inbox. But it doesn't have to be THIS bad. I hope this video helps reverse the trend.

DON'T MAKE THEM STOP LISTENING! One of the most important skills as a corporate presenter or a public speaker is not how much you can impress them, but making sure you don't distract them unintentionally. A powerful and popular tool in presenting is 'anchoring'; using the stage or space you are in, strategically, to enhance the experience and engagement of your audience. However, such tricks can simply distract them instead. TIP: In presenting or facilitating, don't venture into clever tricks to make it more exciting for the listeners, until you can master the simple skill of just being there in the moment, grabbing their attention and holding on to it. Look at them, listen to them, and make sure they are there with you. This can be daunting enough as it is.
