I took The Complete Onboarding Guide For Software Engineers course by Rahul Pandey and gained helpful advice. Below, I am sharing 4 lessons I learned from Rahul Pandey and how they helped me. 𝟏. 𝐌𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐢𝐭 𝐚 𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐤 𝐭𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐧𝐞𝐰 𝐭𝐞𝐚𝐦𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝟏𝐬𝐭 𝟐 𝐰𝐞𝐞𝐤𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 Rahul Pandey shared a helpful article from Andrew Bosworth (https://lnkd.in/g2aeNkUV) on what to talk about: • Ask them to tell you everything they think you should know • What are the biggest challenges the team has right now? • Who else should I talk to? After doing this, I got to know my new teammates better and it taught me about the common challenges my current team members faced. This prepared me not to feel surprised about their common challenges and know where to seek support if I ever faced similar challenges. 𝟐. 𝐒𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐮𝐩 𝐰𝐞𝐞𝐤𝐥𝐲 𝟏:𝟏’𝐬 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐫 𝐨𝐫 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐝 𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐫 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐩 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐰 𝐢𝐧 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐧𝐞𝐰 𝐫𝐨𝐥𝐞 I asked for specific feedback, and I learned that I can grow in my role with these 1:1s and take action toward them. It also taught me my expectations and what to avoid doing so that I can be successful in my role. 𝟑. 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐝𝐞𝐛𝐚𝐬𝐞 𝐛𝐲 𝐦𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐦𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐦𝐨𝐝𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐢𝐭 • This tip may seem obvious and I used to spend more time looking at documentation than digging into the code. • I have learned that documentation is important, but sometimes, it can’t keep up with code changes. • Making small modifications to the code and seeing how it behaves early on will teach you a lot. • It’s also important to know which part of the code base matters by asking engineers in your team or using git blame to see the recent changes. 𝟒. 𝐃𝐨 𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐦𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐭𝐨 𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐩 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐭𝐞𝐚𝐦 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐚𝐬𝐤 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐟𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐛𝐚𝐜𝐤 A small task I did in my new role was making edits to a README and asking for feedback. This gave me a feel for what information would be important and helpful to my team. I wish these tips had been taught to me early in my career because doing these things made me feel more productive, and I saw a difference in my onboarding experience. HOTO | how good can it be? Hand Over and Take Over, from a predecessor to successor at work, is it worth doing? If it needs to be worth, what should it be about? ✍️the undone tasks 🤦the baggage the predecessor carries about the peers at work 🏃the ways and means to avoid owning a task 👋the ways and means to pass the responsibilities 😖the interpersonal conflict the predecessor has on peer; or 🚮dump of all mails, folders and so on and so forth...! It shouldn't be about all these, what it should be is as follows: 📚learnings you cherished at work 🪜failures you had and how you overcome such failures 👍scope for improvement of the team you manage 📝successor notes of all pending tasks with your opinion (not direction) 🤝learnings you gained from peers and your reportees 🗂️organized mail backup with guidance note and 🚫pass zero comments on peers or reportees' personal life,negatives, conflicts and so on and so forth. HOTO of this nature not only helps effective functioning of the successor but also avoid pre judgemental thoughts about others and holds them accountable with a huge level of ownership! Whether the predecessor has been good at work depends on how effective the HOTO process is completed and how efficienctly the goals are met.

Like every other software engineer, I have always aspired to progress in responsibility, impact, pay, and recognition throughout my career. This journey was not just about professional achievements but also about personal growth. I discovered that this growth was not a solitary endeavor but a collaborative process that required careful planning, execution, and the support of others. To name some examples, I had to master the art of pitching and selling ideas, learn how to run meetings effectively, and how to inspire a team. I will readily admit that my perception of my impact and contributions sometimes did not align with others' perceptions. This has led to frustration around my year-end evaluations. However, I always saw those experiences as a learning opportunity. I delved into the reasons behind this and explored strategies for receiving feedback more timely in the future.
