"How've you let people know about what you're doing?" I hear this from my clients, my mentors, my friends, even social influencers. It's easy to think marketing means just yelling, bragging, and pushing your ‘value proposition’ everywhere. You might think the job is just to tell everyone our story. Get a PR company, copywriter, ghostwriter, run LI ads, post like crazy on social media. It seems super important - agitating even. But that's not how things really work. Not since TV started fading out years ago. Ideas that get around do it by word of mouth, not by shouting from rooftops. 💡 Creating a lasting mission and vision requires intention and iteration. Here are some best practices from Vocap’s Vinny Olmstead: ✅ 𝐖𝐞𝐥𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐢𝐧𝐩𝐮𝐭: Include both senior management AND key influencers, regardless of level. Titles don’t matter—what matters is perspective. 👥 𝐔𝐬𝐞 𝐚 𝐟𝐚𝐜𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐫: If possible, bring in an experienced facilitator. Having an outsider who’s done this before can be instrumental to the process. ⏳ 𝐈𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞: Don’t rush it. Take a month or so to let ideas settle. A two-hour session won’t suffice to create something that lasts. 📣 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐩𝐮𝐫𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐞𝐟𝐮𝐥𝐥𝐲: Develop a grassroots communication plan. Celebrate the mission and vision across the company and invest in reinforcing them through merchandise and collateral. 🔄 𝐒𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐤𝐞𝐲 𝐜𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐬: It might sound odd, but getting feedback from customers can make your mission stronger and more aligned with your stakeholders.
